After the battle ended, Life Magazine's William Vandivert traveled to the devastated capital city. Vandivert, Life later reported, found almost every famous building in Berlin in shambles. In the center of town, GIs could walk for blocks and see no living thing, hear nothing but the stillness of death, smell nothing but the stench of death. Hundreds of thousands had perished. Countless more were homeless amid the ruins, but two particular deaths, those of Adolf Hitler and his wife, Eva Braun, symbolized the true final fall of Third Reich. Vandivert was the first western photographer to gain access to Hitler's bunker. Some of his pictures ran in Life. Most of what he shot never appeared in the magazine, but all of his photos illuminate a surreal disturbed universe. In notes that he sent back to his editors in New York, the 33- year- old described his visit to the bunker. These pictures were made in the dark with only candles for illumination, he explained. Our small party of four beat the rest of the mob who came down about 40 minutes after we got there. The Red Army had plundered the bunker well before Vandivert descended into that dark pit.
