## Transcript

One of the prized exhibits here in the collection is the very desk that Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond novels, starting of course, with Casino Royale back in 1952. The typewriter and the photograph from the desk of his great friend, he's an old coward, who was the person that said to Fleming, " Now get on and write that book ." And it's perhaps an old coward that

>> we owe James Bond.

>> We've arrived at the-- at where the books meet the films, really, which is-- which is quite interesting junction because of course, the films are very different. The film Bond is very different from the-- from the written Bond. Here we've got the start of the Robe's Gallery. We have Rosa Klebb and her remarkable shoes down here. Rosa Klebb, like many of the characters in James Bond, is based on a real person. She-- her name is even a sort of, a mixture of two different war time criminals. My favorite crook and partly because of the story that society have given, is Goldfinger. Goldfiner, the name was taken from an entirely innocent architect called Ern?

Goldfinger who Fleming had taken a strong personal disliked to based solely on his architecture. He didn't like the fact that Ern? Goldfinger made very modernist, concrete structures. Fleming preferred older sorts of architecture. So as a way of ribbing him and teasing him, he turned one of his main villains into Auric Goldfinger. Now, the real Goldfinger was so enraged by this that he threatened to sue and have all the copies of Goldfinger paused. And at which point, Fleming threatened to change the name Goldfinger into something far, far worst that would've embarrassed the real Goldfinger even more.

We have the Aston Martin. This is a reduced scale model that was made, I understand, for Prince Andrew as a-- as a boy. It's a completely perfect scale model. In a way, this illustrates, I think in some ways, the contrast between the film Bond and the-- and the-- and the written Bond. Bond only drives one Aston Martin in the books. It's not a-- it's not a critical car to him. He's a Bentley man. He mostly drives Bentleys but because of the films, the Aston Martin has become indissolubly associated with Bond. It's gonna be a big Bond year, I mean, we've got the exhibition of course, but we also have a new Bond book written by Sebastian Faulks.

We have a new Bond film coming out. I think Fleming would've been absolutely astonished that the longevity of his character. If you utter the words 'James Bond' anywhere in the world, you'll likely to get the same reaction, which is a smile. And I think that's a pretty amazing achievement.
