The World Cup grew from 32 to 48 teams in 2026, and [FIFA](https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/%5F/id/49345374/gianni-infantino-fifa-examine-64-team-world-cup-expansion) is already considering 64 for 2030\. The NCAA will [add a new opening round](https://www.ncaa.org/championships/march-madness/expansion-what-to-know/) to the college basketball tournament this season. Just this week, the NBA said it is advancing plans to [expand to 32 teams](https://www.nba.com/news/adam-silver-board-of-governors-september-2026) by 2028\. More teams and more games mean more money. They do not necessarily mean a better product. So when UEFA expanded the Champions League ahead of the 2024-25 season, adding four clubs and increasing each team's league-phase schedule from six to eight matches, [critics argued](https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/%5F/id/41882249/is-criticism-new-uefa-champions-league-format-fair) the tournament was giving in to the same logic, diluting the competition for revenue's sake. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said the new format would "[improve the competitive balance and generate solid revenues that can be distributed to clubs](https://www.uefa.com/news/0275-151c7de63579-30bebad8e85d-1000--uefa-approves-final-format-and-access-list-for-its-club-competi/)." Three seasons in, the Champions League odds may be the best evidence that UEFA delivered on the competitive half of that promise. For 15 straight seasons, the [Champions League favorite](https://www.covers.com/sportsoddshistory/soccer-uefa/?y=2024-2025&sa=soccer&a=champ&b=two) entered the group or league phase at +450 odds or shorter. The longest-priced favorite had an 18.2% raw implied probability. The average raw implied probability across those seasons was 25.1%. Then last season, the shortest pre-league-phase odds were [+600](https://www.covers.com/sportsoddshistory/soccer-uefa/?y=2025-2026&sa=soccer&a=champ&b=two), or 14.3%. This season, the favorite entered at [+500](https://www.covers.com/sportsoddshistory/soccer-uefa/?y=2026-2027&sa=soccer&a=champ&b=two), or 16.7%. Both figures are lower than the 18.2% floor from the previous 15 years—and well below the 25.1% average. Some of that shift may be structural. The field grew from 32 to 36 teams, spreading title probability across four additional clubs. In a simple model where every team had an equal chance of winning, that expansion would reduce each club's theoretical title probability by about 11%, from 3.1% to 2.8%. But the favorite's implied probability has fallen roughly 34% to 43% below its historical average over the past two seasons. Even more notable: Manchester City (+275) and Real Madrid (+333) were each listed as heavy [favorites](https://www.covers.com/sportsoddshistory/soccer-uefa/?y=2024-2025&sa=soccer&a=champ&b=two) entering the 2024-25 season, the year the field expanded. The market didn't adjust when the format changed. It adjusted after seeing what the format produced: a draw that forces the two-time defending champion to face Manchester City and Barcelona within a week, and a title race so compressed that even the favorite's price depends on where you look. ## Champions League Odds Below are the [2026-27 Champions League odds](https://polymarket.com/event/uefa-champions-league-2027-champion-20260701202025549), per Polymarket.  Competitive balance at the top does not always mean competitive balance on the field. Last week's Matchday 1 underscored the format's drawbacks, delivering lopsided matchups with chalky outcomes: [14 of 18 favorites won](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2026/sep/11/champions-league-opening-data-shows-english-dominance-and-too-few-shocks) and two drew, while eight matches were decided by at least two goals and four by at least four. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was a [99% implied favorite](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxuclgame/uefa-champions-league-game/kxuclgame-26sep09psgslo) over Slovan Bratislava and won 6-1\. A larger field can create room for matches like that, but the format also ensures Europe's heavyweights cannot dodge each other for long. The 36 clubs are divided into four pots by seeding strength, with the tournament's highest-seeded teams in Pot 1\. Every club draws two opponents from each pot, including two from its own. For fans, that produces matchups the old format rationed: PSG will travel to Manchester City for Matchday 2 on October 14 and host Barcelona six days later. For PSG, the top seed and two-time defending champion, it means two of its eight league-phase matches come against clubs currently in the market's top six—in a format that advances only eight teams directly to the round of 16\. According to [Opta Analyst](https://theanalyst.com/articles/champions-league-2026-27-fixture-difficulty-league-phase?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com)'s data, PSG has the 14th-toughest fixture and the third-toughest among Pot 1 clubs—an especially brutal draw considering PSG does not have to play itself. PSG's title odds moved from [17% to 14%](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxucl/uefa-champions-league/kxucl-27) on Kalshi in the days that followed the draw announcement on August 27\. And despite opening with a 6-1 rout, the defending champs are tied for fourth on Polymarket's title board at 13%. Barcelona was a 17% favorite on Polymarket heading into Matchday 1\. Lamine Yamal logged three goal contributions in Barcelona's win over Feyenoord Rotterdam, and the favorite's implied probability has since moved to 20%. But even Barca's post-match surge has not created the separation of past Champions League favorites. Polymarket has them at 20% while FanDuel and DraftKings price Barcelona at raw implied probabilities of [16.9%](https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/soccer?tab=champions-league) and [16.1%](https://sportsbook.draftkings.com/leagues/soccer/champions-league?category=futures&subcategory=team-futures&nav%5F1=winner), respectively, with the gap from Polymarket even larger after removing the sportsbook margin. Barcelona's contract alone has drawn more than $900K in trading volume on Polymarket, the most among all clubs. [Barcelona's social media accounts](https://www.instagram.com/p/DTSnYBLDLfz/) combine for more than 428 million followers, trailing only Real Madrid and leading every other club by more than 200 million. That does not mean supporters are pushing up the price, but a fan base that large creates more potential for price-insensitive demand for Barcelona's "Yes" contracts. Maybe Polymarket is too high on Barcelona. Maybe the sportsbooks are too low. Either way, no market gives the favorite better than a one-in-five chance of winning, after 15 seasons in which the favorite averaged roughly a one-in-four chance.
