[Lionel Messi](https://time.com/collection/time100-sports/2026/lionel-messi/) wrote the fairytale in blue and white. [Kylian Mbappé](https://time.com/collections/100-most-influential-people-2023/6269972/kylian-mbappe/) arrived with a red pen. By the time Argentina's Gonzalo Montiel stepped to the penalty spot, the World Cup was at his feet, and 1.5 billion viewers were in his hands—capping a [2022 final](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhEWqfP6V%5Fw) widely considered the [greatest](https://www.foxsports.com/stories/soccer/was-argentina-france-the-best-world-cup-final-ever-ranking-the-5-best) ever played.

FIFA's next act is unprecedented scale: three host countries, 48 teams, 104 matches, and an estimated [six billion people](https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/articles/500-days-to-go-milestone-excitement-builds) expected to follow the [2026 World Cup](https://time.com/article/2026/05/27/fifa-world-cup-2026-complete-guide/) across television and social media platforms. A tournament designed to command the planet's attention arrives in an era built to trade on it.

The World Cup winner market has amassed roughly [$120 million](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxmenworldcup/mens-world-cup-winner/kxmenworldcup-26?op%5Fmarket%5Fticker=KXMENWORLDCUP-26-ES) in trading volume on Kalshi, making it the platform's third-largest live offering, trailing only the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee ($125 million) and 2026 NBA Finals ($290 million) markets. Kalshi primarily operates within the United States. On Polymarket—an exchange available in roughly 180 countries—the World Cup winner market has attracted $1.7 billion in trading volume, and counting.

[H2 Gambling Capital](https://h2gc.com/news/general/h2-estimates-record-betting-on-fifa-world-cup-2026), a market data and forecasting firm, projects roughly $60 billion in legal sportsbook wagers on the 2026 World Cup. Measured in sportsbook handle, the World Cup is expected to be more than 30 [Super Bowls](https://www.americangaming.org/americans-to-legally-wager-estimated-1-76-billion-on-super-bowl-lx/) packed into one tournament. The estimate does not include prediction-market platforms, where World Cup contracts have generated more than $3 billion in trading volume, two days before the month-long tournament begins.

The World Cup's footprint can be measured in [visitors](https://lu.usembassy.gov/already-destinations-u-s-cities-embrace-fifa-world-cup-2026/), [carbon emissions](https://time.com/article/2026/06/03/carbon-emissions-2026-fifa-world-cup/), and steep [ticket prices](https://time.com/article/2026/05/24/why-2026-world-cup-ticket-prices-are-so-high/). The most distinctly 2026 metric, though, may be the billions of dollars moving before the ball does. Hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the World Cup kicks off on June 11 and runs through July 19\. Which country's anthem is expected to close the tournament?

## FIFA World Cup Odds

Here's a look at the [2026 FIFA World Cup odds](https://polymarket.com/event/world-cup-winner), per [Polymarket](https://polymarket.com/).

Before the World Cup had prediction markets, it had [Paul the Octopus](https://abcnews.com/International/paul-octopus-predicted-world-cup-winner-died/story?id=11971509). In 2010, the tournament's most famous forecaster lived in a German aquarium, choosing winners from flag-marked boxes and turning an 8-for-8 record into global oracle status. In 2026, traders have more to go on than a tentacle and a hunch.

Spain and France are tied for the shortest World Cup title odds, each currently showing a 16% implied win probability on both Polymarket and Kalshi. Spain won UEFA Euro 2024 and ranks second on [FIFA's official power rankings](https://inside.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men). France, led by [Golden Boot favorite](https://polymarket.com/event/world-cup-golden-boot-winner) Mbappé and reigning Ligue 1 Player of the Year Ousmane Dembélé, arrives with the talent of a champion and the scar tissue of a runner-up following its penalty-shootout loss to Argentina in 2022\.

Spain carries the shortest odds (+220) to reach the World Cup Final on [DraftKings Sportsbook](https://sportsbook.draftkings.com/leagues/soccer/world-cup-2026?category=futures&subcategory=team-futures&nav%5F1=to-reach-final). France is the modern tournament's constant: Les Bleus have reached four of the last seven finals, winning in 1998 and 2018\. As the tournament creates traffic across North America, the bracket has produced its own bottleneck: if Spain and France both win their respective groups, they would be competing from the same side of the bracket, meaning only one can reach MetLife Stadium on July 19\. Here is the full group-stage draw for the 2026 World Cup:

The World Cup is broad in invitation but narrow in coronation. Across the last 15 tournaments, the eventual champion's average [pre-tournament price](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/dec/14/which-team-won-the-world-cup-with-the-longest-pre-tournament-odds) stood at roughly +585 odds, and no team has lifted the trophy with an implied win probability below 10% since Italy's (+1800) underdog run in 1982\. Only four countries—France, Spain, England, and Portugal—currently have an implied win probability of at least 10%, yet roughly $1.6 billion has traded on the rest of the field. The market's strongest World Cup signal is not probability alone, but participation: the money people put behind the belief that, for one month, history might make room for their country.
