Christopher Nolan has bent time, crossed galaxies, and split the atom. Now he's taking on the Greek gods—and testing the world's appetite for an R-rated, three-hour epic.

Yesterday marked the third anniversary of "[Barbenheimer](https://time.com/6293844/barbie-oppenheimer-internet-phenomenon/)," the cultural phenomenon surrounding the simultaneous theatrical release of Greta Gerwig's _Barbie_ and Nolan's _Oppenheimer_. The pink-and-black, [made-for-memes](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/22/opinion/barbie-oppenheimer-meme-culture.html) double feature fueled the [fourth-biggest domestic box office weekend](https://variety.com/2023/film/box-office/box-office-barbie-oppenheimer-opening-weekend-shatter-records-1235677601/) in history—a win for non-superhero filmmaking and an industry still rebounding from the pandemic. _Oppenheimer_ went on to win seven Oscars, including Best Picture.

For his encore, [Nolan](https://time.com/article/2026/05/12/christopher-nolan-odyssey-interview/) is taking the long way home. _The Odyssey_ was released nationwide on July 17\. Its journey, fittingly, began long before: [tickets](https://variety.com/2025/film/box-office/the-odyssey-tickets-on-sale-year-before-christopher-nolan-1236460959/) for a limited slate of opening-weekend IMAX 70mm screenings went on sale a full year in advance. Within an hour, 95% of the seats had sold. The [film's trailer](https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2025/12/23/christopher-nolans-odyssey-trailer-earns-1214-million-views-in-first-24-hours-doubles-oppenheimer/) later drew 121.4 million views in its first 24 hours, more than double the first-day viewership of the _Oppenheimer_ trailer.

By opening weekend, _The Odyssey_ had turned the graveyard shift into primetime: 2 a.m., 3 a.m., and 6 a.m. [screenings](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/the-odyssey-2am-screenings-imax-70mm-1236815410/) were packed with bleary-eyed Nolan diehards. [Resale tickets](https://finance.yahoo.com/media-advertising/articles/christopher-nolans-odyssey-resale-tickets-140000227.html) were selling for $165 apiece on eBay. Even the theater staff got a star turn: one Dallas Cinemark employee's pre-show [lesson on 70mm went viral on TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@goofygoober7394/video/7664628869541940493), with commenters demanding he get a raise—and asking if he does parties. Even with a year of hype in its sails, _The Odyssey_ exceeded box office projections and could be on course for a record-setting performance.

## _The Odyssey_ Conquers the Box Office

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt18bdd909630614ff/6a61002f59680b0193cc126a/Screenshot_2026-07-22_at_1.23.17_AM.png?branch=main_v1)

More than [$1.4 million](https://polymarket.com/event/the-odyssey-opening-weekend-box-office-20260623143428166) was traded on the domestic opening-weekend performance for _The Odyssey_. By release day, traders gave the film as little as a 35.5% implied chance of topping a $115 million domestic debut. [_Deadline_ reported](https://deadline.com/2026/07/box-office-the-odyssey-forecast-1236982438/) a projected $85 million to $100 million domestic debut and a $200 million worldwide opening.

[_The Odyssey_ opened to $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million worldwide](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/the-odyssey-box-office-christopher-nolan-opening-weekend-shatters-expectations-1236815861/). The markets were wrong. The trades were wrong. And the film sailed past those forecasts despite a formidable Sunday rival: the World Cup final, which drew [62.8 million U.S. viewers](https://www.axios.com/2026/07/21/world-cup-final-viewership-record), making it the second-most-watched event of the year.

A 2011 [survey](https://theconversation.com/these-high-school-classics-have-been-taught-for-generations-could-they-be-on-their-way-out-188197) published in English Leadership Quarterly found that Homer's _The Odyssey_ was among the five most frequently taught books in American high schools. Maybe it was a chance to finally meet Odysseus without the SparkNotes crutch. Maybe it was nostalgia for _The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie_, itself inspired by the epic. Whatever drew them aboard, [moviegoers](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/the-odyssey-box-office-christopher-nolan-opening-weekend-shatters-expectations-1236815861/) between the ages of 18 and 34 made up half of the opening-weekend audience.

After delivering Nolan the biggest worldwide opening of his career, _The Odyssey_ is now chasing another milestone: becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. [Polymarket](https://polymarket.com/event/the-odyssey-total-domestic-gross-by-august-31-20260716181154228) now gives the film a 95% chance of crossing $350 million domestically by the end of August. [Nolan's last four films](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt15398776/?ref%5F=bo%5Fse%5Fr%5F1) have each earned at least 65.5% of their total box office overseas. Assume the same overseas tilt, and a $350 million domestic haul implies a global total north of $1 billion. If Polymarket's projection holds, _The Odyssey_ may be on track to clear the billion-dollar mark by the end of August—with awards season still ahead and enough theatrical runway to chase down the [$1.338 billion R-rated record](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/mpaa%5Ftitle%5Flifetime%5Fgross/?area=XWW&by%5Fmpaa=R) set by _Deadpool & Wolverine_. The long way home has already proven to be Nolan's shortest route to history. Now audiences get to decide where that journey ends.
