One of them is being good in the wrong company. Members of a certain NFC division know what that costs. The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers each finished 12-5 last season. The Carolina Panthers finished 8-9\. One of those three teams won its division. The one with a losing record. Hanging a [division banner](https://ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2015/06/11/indianapolis-colts-afc-finalist-banner-2014-pathetic-andrew-luck-deflategate/82079529007/) is the quickest way to hear it from the participation trophy police—and the clearest path to raising the one that matters. Division winners are guaranteed at least one home playoff game, and home teams have won nearly two-thirds of playoff games since 2015\. Thirteen of the past 14 Super Bowl champions won their division, and the only wild card to break through in that span employed [Tom Brady](https://time.com/tag/tom-brady/). That divisional math—odd on paper, indefensible if you root for an NFC West team—bought the 12-win Rams a road playoff game at Carolina against a team that, [quite literally](https://www.panthers.com/news/dave-canales-panthers-have-another-championship-opportunity-now-in-the-playoffs), clinched home-field advantage from the couch. If the [AFC is betting on a return to order](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/the-afc-has-new-division-champions-and-the-same-old-favorites/), the NFC is promising more divisional absurdity. The NFC East is the only division where last year's winner is favored to do it again. The NFC North was so deep last season that arguably its best team finished last—and the market projects a worst-to-first turnaround. The NFC South may once again hand out a home playoff game by process of elimination. And in the NFC West, even a Lombardi Trophy does not buy favorite status. ## NFC East Odds Below are the [2026 NFC East odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxnflnfceast/national-football-conference-east-winner/kxnflnfceast-27), per Kalshi.  The NFC East went 21 years without a repeat winner. The Philadelphia Eagles snapped the streak last season—and are now the only defending division champion in the league favored to repeat. But the division that has spent two decades passing around the crown has reasons to revert to form. The Washington Commanders went 12-5 in 2024 before spending last season at the mercy of the injury report, with Jayden Daniels missing more than half the season and his top target Terry McLaurin sitting out seven games. The New York Giants finally hit on a quarterback with rookie Jaxson Dart, only for leading receiver Malik Nabers and [on-and-off-the-field highlight reel Cam Skattebo](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/%5F/id/49401858/giants-rb-skattebo-perfectly-fine-botched-backflip) to suffer season-ending injuries before Week 9\. Both teams will be more competitive with health, and neither is even Philadelphia's biggest threat. Dak Prescott spent last season reminding the NFC East that its best quarterback still wears a star—4,552 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, 10 interceptions. The Dallas Cowboys have a 38% implied probability to win the division, slightly lagging the Eagles at 41%. ## NFC North Odds Below are the [2026 NFC North odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxnflnfcnorth/national-football-conference-north-winner/kxnflnfcnorth-27), per Kalshi.  Divisions are supposed to create order. Four teams, two games against each of the other three, largely overlapping schedules—the format exists to sort them. The NFC North was too good for its own hierarchy last season: every team finished above .500\. It was just the second time since the 1970 merger that every team in a division finished with a winning record, leaving one fan base on the wrong end of some unlucky math. The Detroit Lions outscored their opponents by 68 points. That was the best point differential in the division and the third-best in the conference. They still finished last in the NFC North. Detroit was good enough to win plenty of divisions but happened to play in one of the NFL's toughest—and caught too few breaks inside it, including a 2-5 record in one-score games. The market is betting on a worst-to-first turnaround, giving the Lions a 41% implied chance to win the division. From top to bottom, the NFC North is the NFL's toughest division—and makes the next one seem like grounds for realignment. ## NFC South Odds Below are the [2026 NFC South odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxnflnfcsouth/national-football-conference-south-winner/kxnflnfcsouth-27), per Kalshi.  The NFC North has a "someone has to finish last" problem. The NFC South has a "someone has to win" problem. While every North team had a winning record last season, every South team had a losing one. The Panthers stumbled upon the division title in fitting fashion. They [lost a division-clinching Week 18 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np56aguXdrA) before an Atlanta Falcons win over the New Orleans Saints handed Carolina the tiebreaker. The market is expecting the NFC South to hand out another postseason ticket by default: the Buccaneers, Saints, Panthers, and Falcons rank 20th, 24th, 25th, and 26th on the [Super Bowl odds board](https://www.espn.com/nfl/futures). Worse for the division's credibility, the team that has just the 24th-best championship odds has about as good of a chance to host a playoff game this season as the defending Super Bowl champions, who are stuck in the only division where 14 wins feels like the price of admission. ## NFC West Odds Below are the [2026 NFC West odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxnflnfcwest/national-football-conference-west-winner/kxnflnfcwest-27), per Kalshi.  Traders cannot currently buy a "no" contract on the Arizona Cardinals winning the NFC West. Some outcomes are apparently too obvious to trade. That says less about Arizona than the company it keeps: the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks, the [Super Bowl-favorite](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/super-bowl-odds-rams-separate-from-the-field/) Rams, and a 49ers team capable of joining that class when healthy all call the West home. The Rams had the second-best record in the NFL last season, then traded for two-time Defensive Player of the Year [Myles Garrett](https://time.com/collection/time100-sports/2026/myles-garrett/) and lured three-time Defensive Player of the Year [Aaron Donald out of retirement](https://www.nfl.com/videos/aaron-donald-addresses-the-media-following-career-announcement-the-nfl-report). Los Angeles has a 52% implied probability to win the NFC West. The Seahawks tore through the postseason by an average winning margin of 18.3 points, beating both the 49ers and Rams along the way. They are tied for the [second-shortest odds to repeat as champions](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/super-bowl-odds-rams-separate-from-the-field/). But in one final quirk of divisional math: 13 teams have more than a 30% implied probability to win their division.
