Hollywood has been running a decades-long prediction market on the arrival of flying cars. _The Simpsons_ bet 2013\. _Back to the Future Part II_ bet 2015\. _Blade Runner_ bet 2019\.

Last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk declared, "[turns out the future does have flying cars](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2110913107094606330)," after unveiling three versions of the second-generation Tesla Roadster, including a Rocket trim that can leave the ground. Following repeated production delays, the flying-car future has arrived with some decidedly unfuturistic fine print.

The second-generation Tesla Roadster was announced in 2017, with production set to begin in 2020\. In an October 2025 interview with Joe Rogan, Musk said he hoped to unveil the Roadster "[before the end of the year](https://elonmuskarchive.org/video/jre-2404-musk-2025)." The next week, [Musk told shareholders](https://autos.yahoo.com/new-vehicles-and-reviews/articles/elon-musk-pours-cold-water-170747282.html) the company was aiming for a demo event on April 1, 2026, noting that the April Fools' Day scheduling gave him "[some deniability because I can say I was just kidding](https://autos.yahoo.com/new-vehicles-and-reviews/articles/elon-musk-pours-cold-water-170747282.html)." Good one. Tesla finally unveiled the new Roadster on October 15 at a SpaceX testing facility in Texas. In the demo, the Rocket trim can be seen driving upside down before launching off a ramp and briefly flying using cold-gas thrusters.

> [](https://twitter.com/Tesla/status/2110913438293647789?s=42)

Tesla's post has received more than 98 million views on X, where one user wrote, "[I can't begin to tell you how much I like it when my car stays on the ground.](https://x.com/PeteBlackburn/status/2110923148908544034)" Good news: the ground is still the only option. The Rocket is one of three new Roadster versions—and the only one that can fly—but Tesla's website notes that it is "[not approved for public road use](https://www.tesla.com/roadster?redirect=no&)."

Musk said production will begin in 2028, but after nearly a decade of delays and some cautious language from Tesla itself, traders are fading the latest Roadster delivery timeline.

## Tesla Roadster Delivery Date Odds

Below are the [Tesla Roadster delivery date odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxteslaroadster/tesla-roadster-delivered/kxteslaroadster-27), per Kalshi.

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltce09da7529d56f68/6ada4e7ee9fce17febf3ca1d/Screenshot_2026-10-22_at_12.46.10_PM.png?branch=main_v1)

Kalshi's market currently gives Tesla a 48% chance of beginning Roadster deliveries before 2029\.

Musk said production will begin in 2028, but [Tesla's quarterly update](https://assets-ir.tesla.com/tesla-contents/IR/TSLA-Q3-2026-Update.pdf) released Wednesday makes the latest target date look about as concrete as the ones that came before. The Roadster is still listed as being in "[design development](https://assets-ir.tesla.com/tesla-contents/IR/TSLA-Q3-2026-Update.pdf)," with its manufacturing region marked as "[TBD](https://assets-ir.tesla.com/tesla-contents/IR/TSLA-Q3-2026-Update.pdf)" and no production capacity disclosed. Tesla will still take your card number, though.

The Tesla Roadster Performance and Thrust models are currently [available for reservation](https://www.tesla.com/roadster/reserve#payment) for $50K and $250K, respectively, even as the r[eservation agreement](https://www.tesla.com/coinorder/api/v4/terms?locale=en%5FUS&model=mt&saleType=PreSale) states, "we cannot guarantee when your vehicle will actually be delivered or if it will be delivered." That delivery disclaimer isn't without precedent. OpenAI CEO [Sam Altman](https://x.com/sama/status/1984023663642087831?ref%5Fsrc=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1984023663642087831%7Ctwgr%5Ef2a3ac06ae99c1f70ca0fd405487b50efa805e54%7Ctwcon%5Es1%5F&ref%5Furl=https%3A%2F%2Fguessingheadlights.com%2Fopenai-ceo-sam-altman-wanted-his-50000-tesla-roadster-deposit-back-now-elon-musk-says-hes-changed-his-mind%2F) waited seven years for his Tesla Roadster before asking for his $50K deposit back. As Bart Simpson once asked Homer Simpson: "[Why'd you buy the first hover car ever made? Didn't you know it'd take time to work out the kinks?](https://simpsons.fandom.com/wiki/Future-Drama)"

Tesla has had nine years to work out the kinks. The flying car exists, but the one a customer can actually own or operate remains a car of the future. _The Jetsons_ bet 2062\. Smart money.
