A $300 million domestic weekend used to mean the whole movie business was having a monster three days. The box office had cleared that mark only four times. [_Spider-Man: Brand New Day_](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/spider-man-box-office/?live%5Fpreview=02852a21f2c5477ab992ffec8d7fda39&content%5Ftype%5Fuid=partner%5Farticle&entry%5Fuid=blt4b7e427d77513104) did it solo, opening to $360 million in North America—the [biggest domestic debut in history](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/spider-man-brand-new-day-opening-record-endgame-box-office-1236662986/).

The record it broke belonged to the pre-COVID box office. [_Avengers: Endgame_ opened to $357 million in 2019](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/top%5Fopening%5Fweekend/), nearly $100 million above the previous domestic record. Then theaters shut down, [streaming rewired audience habits](https://time.com/5806060/coronavirus-movie-theaters-streaming/), and that mark seemed stranded in another cinematic universe—until _Brand New Day_ swung past it.

A superhero movie setting a box-office record is not exactly a multiverse-level plot twist. That's kind of their whole deal. But even box-office tracking that expected _Brand New Day_ to deliver the biggest opening of 2026 massively underestimated the scale, by more than $100 million in some forecasts. One set of forecasters came closer than the rest—and they weren't in Hollywood.

## Prediction Markets Beat Box Office Projections

[Sony projected a $195 million domestic debut](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/spider-man-brand-new-day-box-office-opening-records-1236822094/) for _Spider-Man: Brand New Day_. The movie opened to $360 million, about 85% higher than the studio's forecast. But studios aren't always the most reliable narrators when it comes to their own blockbusters. A [conservative projection](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2013-oct-08-la-fi-ct-movie-tracking-20131008-story.html) can double as free marketing: set the bar low, clear it by $165 million, and let the "smashes expectations" headlines write themselves. That is what outside forecasters are supposed to correct for, but in this instance, even the bullish models treated $300 million as the ceiling.

[Boxoffice Pro](https://www.boxofficepro.com/) initially projected _Brand New Day_ to gross between $230 million and $250 million, before raising its final-week forecast to $280 million to $300 million—a range it called "[an extreme outlier in the post-pandemic box office](https://www.boxofficepro.com/weekend-preview-spider-man-brand-new-day-could-potentially-score-second-biggest-opening-weekend-of-all-time/)." [Box Office Theory](https://boxofficetheory.substack.com/p/box-office-tracking-forecasts-spider-man-brand-new-day-week-before-release) landed in similar territory, with a $249 million median expectation and a $274 million high-end forecast.

Prediction-market traders weren't surprised _Brand New Day_ pulled off the biggest domestic opening weekend ever. They were betting on it.

Two days before the film's release, [Polymarket](https://polymarket.com/event/spider-man-brand-new-day-opening-weekend-box-office-20260618144048824) gave _Brand New Day_ an 83% chance of opening above $280 million—the highest threshold available in the standard opening-weekend box-office market. By July 30, before Thursday night preview, that probability had climbed to 95%. And in a separate, [higher-strikes market](https://polymarket.com/event/spider-man-brand-new-day-opening-weekend-box-office-higher-strikes-20260723205025357) that same day, traders were pricing in a 53% chance the film would clear $350 million—and only a 5.3% chance that it would gross less than $280 million.

[Box-office projections](https://www.nytimes.com/article/box-office-projections-tracking.html) help studios gauge interest, informing marketing and budgeting decisions leading up to a film's release. If a movie is tracking poorly, a studio might scale back on marketing investments; if a movie is tracking well, a studio might allocate more money toward the campaign. That's why [tracking devices](https://www.nytimes.com/article/box-office-projections-tracking.html)—audience surveys, trailer view counts, presale data—exist. But box-office bombs and surprises still sneak up on the industry. With _Brand New Day_, prediction markets offered a different kind of tracking tool: a live read in which the audience was not just being measured, but measuring itself.

One better read does not make prediction markets Hollywood's new crystal ball. But the market may have made a case for becoming a useful signal in the industry's tracking arsenal—if only to show studio executives how low to set the bar.
