Standby at the New York Film Festival usually means an hour-long staring contest with the 66th Street station. Thirty minutes on a rainy day. But on Wednesday, people began [lining up outside Lincoln Center at 2:30 a.m.](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/30/movies/elizabeth-holmes-documentary-nathan-fielder-you-can-see-everything.html), nearly 18 hours before the film they were hoping to see had its New York premiere. And if the [early reviews](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/you-can-see-everything-nathan-fielder-elizabeth-holmes-doc-1235633117/) are any indication, the secret Nathan Fielder documentary that follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, beginning 34 days before she reports to prison, is worth losing sleep over.

_You Can See Everything_, co-directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, premiered at a [secret screening](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/07/movies/elizabeth-holmes-documentary-nathan-fielder-a24.html) in Telluride on September 6\. The audience was required to lock their phones and entered the screening without knowing what they were about to watch. Almost no one outside production knew the film existed a month ago.

Now it's one of the year's most anticipated releases, in part due to a viral teaser that has drawn more than 60 million views on X. The clip shows Holmes trying to convince Fielder that she's not the lying type. Fielder, whose work in _Nathan for You_ and _The Rehearsal_ thrives on never letting an awkward moment lie, deadpans, "Okay. Good chat." Holmes' [official X account,](https://x.com/ElizabethHolmes/status/2096765761574301754?s=42) widely believed to be run by her partner [Billy Evans](https://x.com/BobbyAllyn/status/2096997627846078958), asked A24 to tag her in the replies, punctuating the request with the [melting face emoji](https://emojipedia.org/melting-face).

New York Film Festival artistic director [Dennis Lim introduced](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/you-can-see-everything-a24-release-date-showtimes-1236718070/) _You Can See Everything_ on Wednesday night: "You know the one minute of the teaser that made the world, or at least the internet, lose its collective mind? This is three hours of that." Following the screening, Fielder and Oppenheim [asked the audience](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/nathan-fielder-elizabeth-holmes-you-can-see-everything-liar-1236893716/) to keep the film's details under wraps ahead of its October 16 release. Social media and the trades have mostly obliged, though reviews continue to allude to a big [twist](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/you-can-see-everything-a24-release-date-showtimes-1236718070/). Whatever happened in those three hours may have put _You Can See Everything_ on the verge of Oscar history.

## Oscars Best Picture Nominee Odds

Below are the [odds for the Best Picture nominees at the 2027 Oscars](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxoscarnompic/oscar-nominations-for-best-picture/kxoscarnompic-27), per Kalshi.

Documentaries make up roughly 10% of the [Criterion Collection](https://www.criterion.com/shop/collection/18-documentaries), 6% of [Sight & Sound's top 100 films](https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-time), and 0% of the 621 films ever nominated for Best Picture.

The market gives _You Can See Everything_ a 41% chance of becoming the first documentary nominated for Best Picture.

You wouldn't know it from watching the Oscars, but documentaries are eligible to be nominated for Best Picture. More than 100 documentaries have been [submitted for consideration](https://press.oscars.org/news/321-feature-films-contention-96th-academy-awards) across the past four cycles. None made the cut, while [films inspired by documentaries](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2011/feb/02/the-fighter-movie-micky-ward), such as _The Fighter_, have gone on to compete for the Academy's biggest honor. Last year, Michael Benedict, a director at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, [told Variety](https://variety.com/2025/film/awards/can-a-documentary-be-nominated-for-best-picture-1236586255/), "I'm a little embarrassed to say that we are over 90 years old and there has never been a documentary nominated for Best Picture." Benedict went on to say that it is his "[mission](https://variety.com/2025/film/awards/can-a-documentary-be-nominated-for-best-picture-1236586255/)" to end that drought.

With the ninth-highest nomination odds, _You Can See Everything_ sits just inside the market's projected ten-film Best Picture field. Documentaries have been waiting in the Academy's standby line for nearly a century. The film that inspired an 18-hour-long one could be their ticket in.
