The Astros became the first team in a full season to reach the playoffs without a winning record. Max Scherzer treated fans to one last Mad Max experience, [refusing to exit the mound](https://x.com/MLB/status/2104316752733823303) in what might have been his final career start—and finishing just three strikeouts behind Justin Verlander for eighth on the [all-time list](https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/SO%5Fp%5Fcareer.shtml), a day after [Verlander tearfully gave up the ball](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89HVziOcpnw) to someone he couldn't argue with. The weekend's final twist arrived dressed in pinstripes. The league [canceled](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/%5F/id/50045225/rain-forces-cancellation-orioles-yankees-regular-season-finale) the Yankees' home finale due to a nor'easter. The Red Sox, meanwhile, were [sent to Tampa Bay](https://www.mlb.com/news/cubs-red-sox-game-to-be-played-at-tropicana-field-on-sunday-september-27-2026) to play their final "home" game against the Cubs at Tropicana Field. Neither game had postseason implications, but the way each side spent its [Sunday](https://x.com/NESN/status/2104309559779025333) might. New York got an extra day of rest. Boston got an extra road trip. The postseason bracket wouldn't have it any other way: the Red Sox and Yankees will renew their rivalry and settle their travel-fueled grievances in the Wild Card Series. The Red Sox-Yankees series is getting the primetime slot throughout this week's Wild Card games, but the market's top billing belongs to the National League: one team has roughly the same World Series probability as the top four American League contenders combined—and it isn't the club that won an MLB-best 103 games, a mark reached by 13 previous MLB-best teams in the Wild Card era. Eight went on to the World Series. ## World Series Odds Below are the [2026 World Series odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxmlb/world-series/kxmlb-26), per Kalshi.  Since the Wild Card era began in 1995, there have been 13 teams before the 2026 Brewers that finished with the best record in MLB while winning at least 103 games. Eight of those teams, or 61.5%, reached the World Series. Four, or 30.8%, won it. The market is far less bullish on Milwaukee than that history would suggest: a [26%](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxmlbnl/mlb-national-league-championship/kxmlbnl-26) chance of reaching the World Series and a 16.8% chance of winning it. Milwaukee finished the regular season with MLB-best marks in batting average, on-base percentage, and run differential. They had the second-best team ERA, too, led by second-year phenom Jacob Misiorowski, who paced the league with a 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts—and threw a record [57 pitches of at least 100 mph](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/%5F/id/48874861/brewers-misiorowski-hits-100-mph-57-s-fans-12-gem) in a single game before offering an equally flashy explanation: "[That's what I do](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/%5F/id/48874861/brewers-misiorowski-hits-100-mph-57-s-fans-12-gem)." Historically, the best statistical team in baseball is priced like it. Nine of those aforementioned 13 teams were either the [World Series favorite or co-favorite](https://www.covers.com/sportsoddshistory/world-series-favorites-entering-the-playoffs/) entering the postseason, and all but one was listed at +360 or shorter. The Brewers are listed as high as [+600](https://sportsbook.draftkings.com/page/world-series-odds) at some sportsbooks, which implies a 14.3% probability. The Brew Crew can take the odds as personally as [Craig Counsell jumping ship to manage the Cubs](https://www.mlb.com/news/brewers-contract-offer-to-craig-counsell), but the market isn't so much doubting Milwaukee as it is treating the Los Angeles Dodgers as the most inevitable team in sports. The Dodgers have a 30.5% implied probability of becoming the first team to three-peat since the 1998-2000 Yankees. L.A.'s World Series chances climbed from [35% to 41% when they acquired Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/mlb-world-series-odds-dodgers-surge-after-skubal-trade/) at the trade deadline. The Dodgers' probability has since fallen to 30.5%, but that's still nearly as high as the championship probability for the American League's four leading contenders—Rays, Yankees, Guardians, Red Sox—combined, at 31.7%. The American League is guaranteed a spot in the World Series. It is essentially being priced as the field. The Brewers are still trying to forget why the Dodgers are inspiring this level of confidence. Shohei Ohtani hit three home runs and struck out 10 batters over six scoreless innings in Game 4 of the 2025 NLCS. It was one of the [greatest single-game performances](https://www.wsj.com/sports/baseball/shohei-ohtani-dodgers-home-runs-pitching-stats-b3af0244) in sports history, one that ended with the Brewers having nothing more to show for their 97-win season than a sweep. Ohtani and Co. finished this season with the second-best record but look mortal this time around. Across the previous two seasons, the Dodgers went a combined 99-78 against teams that were at or above .500\. They went just 38-37 in that [split](https://www.mlb.com/brewers/standings/mlb?tableType=regularSeasonStandard) this season. A "championship hangover" remains difficult to diagnose until the Dodgers prove otherwise, but that may be the strongest tell that Los Angeles has lost its fastball—and they're projected to meet a Brewers team that went a league-best 45-30 in that split. Los Angeles entered this season with a [103.5 win total](https://sports.betmgm.com/en/blog/mlb/dodgers-win-total-over-under-odds-prediction-bm23/) and won 100 games. Milwaukee entered with an [84.5 win total](https://sports.betmgm.com/en/blog/mlb/mlb-win-totals-odds-predictions-bm23/) and won 103\. Los Angeles has the highest payroll in the league at [$380 million](https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/%5F/year/2026). Milwaukee has the 12th-lowest at [$146 million](https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/%5F/year/2026). The preseason market overvalued the more expensive team and undervalued the less expensive one. Entering October, it still favors the more expensive one. A Dodgers win would mark the ninth straight year in which a [top-10 spender](https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/%5F/year/2026) won the World Series. The bargain Brewers aren't just trying to defy a historically low market price for a 103-win team.
