Major League Baseball makes you earn October. As Commissioner [Rob Manfred once put it](https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2043526): "162 games have a way of identifying who the best teams really are." Most years, anyway. For the first time in MLB history, a team with a losing record over a full regular season could make the playoffs this season. This weekend will decide which team wins the AL West and, with it, a playoff berth and a home Wild Card Series: the 79-80 Houston Astros or the 79-80 Texas Rangers. [Three losing teams have made the playoffs before](https://sports.betmgm.com/en/blog/mlb/mlb-teams-to-make-playoffs-with-losing-record-bm23/), all in shortened seasons. The Kansas City Royals got in at 50-53 in the strike-shortened 1981 season, and the Milwaukee Brewers and Astros both got in at 29-31 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. No losing team over a full season has ever made the playoffs, and no losing team has ever won its division, period. That changes this weekend if neither the Astros nor Rangers wins two of their final three games. For fans of certain AL East teams, the unprecedented playoff picture is as maddening as it looks. The Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox have the [three best records](https://www.espn.com/mlb/standings) in the American League, but all three play in the AL East, which Tampa Bay has already clinched. New York has outscored opponents by 143 runs. Boston has outscored opponents by 79 runs. Those are the two best run differentials in the American League. Both teams will enter the playoffs seeded behind an AL West champion that has been outscored by at least 40 runs entering Friday. It gets better—worse, really. The Yankees and Red Sox will face each other in the Wild Card Series, ensuring that a top-three AL team is eliminated before the Division Series. And there is a scenario in which the Astros lose their final three games, finish 79-83, win the AL West, and host a Wild Card Series against a team that lost 223 games across its previous two seasons. ## AL West Odds Below are the [2026 AL West odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxmlbalwest/american-league-west-winner/kxmlbalwest-26), per Kalshi. ##  The Astros and Rangers each have a 79-80 record entering Friday night. But the Astros own the [tiebreaker](https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-playoff-picture-and-bracket-2026) over the Rangers after finishing 9-4 in the head-to-head series this season, an advantage that helps explain why the market currently gives Houston a 70% implied probability of winning the AL West. The Astros don't need to win more games than the Rangers this weekend. They just need to win as many. Which brings us to a scenario so backwards you almost have to root for it: the Astros could lose out and still win the division so long as the Rangers lose out, too. The Astros would then theoretically host a Wild Card Series against the Chicago White Sox, a group that lost 223 games across its previous two seasons and, despite the valiant rebuild, still would have finished fourth in the AL East this season. MLB teams have expanded the strike zone when it comes to champagne celebrations. We've seen [teams](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2026/09/20/sports/red-sox-rays-playoff-berth/) lose a game and retreat to a plastic-wrapped clubhouse because a playoff-clinching result broke their way in another ballpark. Depending on how this weekend shakes out, Houston's PR team might suggest a round of handshakes instead. Houston closes with three games against the Athletics. Texas gets three against the Minnesota Twins. Both of those opponents have already been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Yet over their past 20 games apiece, they have combined for just one fewer win than the two teams vying for the division title.
