The WNBA spent All-Star Weekend celebrating the league's best players—now teams have less than a week to decide whether they have enough of them.

The August 2 [trade deadline](https://www.wnba.com/keydates "undefined") gives teams a chance to negotiate their way into the championship race. Preseason odds price potential. Deadline odds price evidence. This season, the gap between the two is enormous.

A 2025 expansion team has gone from picking its first players to picking apart the rest of the league, storming out of the break with the second-best record. The team they're chasing turned a 6% preseason title chance into nearly a coin flip behind a rookie rewriting the record book, all while its best player watched from the sideline. Now she's back—and the league's best team may have won the trade deadline without even reaching for the phone. Here's where the WNBA championship market stands heading into the second half of the season.

## WNBA Championship Odds

Below are the [2026 WNBA Finals odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxwnba/wnba-championship/kxwnba-26 "undefined"), per Kalshi.

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltc822795cfc029723/6a67bd0ca3531f6eb9bd2f52/Screenshot_2026-07-27_at_3.18.09_PM.png?branch=main_v1)

The Minnesota Lynx entered the season with the makings of a first-to-worst collapse. Last year's No. 1 seed had lost three core members to free agency while Napheesa Collier, the back-to-back MVP runner-up, was set to miss the first half of the season after undergoing [surgeries on both ankles](https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/%5F/id/48554124/lynx-napheesa-collier-ankle-surgery-sidelined-june "undefined"). Instead, the Lynx have coasted to a 22-6 record, powered by a variable no preseason model could price: Olivia Miles.

Miles, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft, became the [fastest rookie to reach 500 points and 150 assists](https://x.com/ESPNInsights "undefined"), a record previously set by [Paige Bueckers](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2025/7318866/paige-bueckers/ "undefined"). At a 95% implied probability to win Rookie of the Year, Miles isn't so much chasing the award as running out the clock. The former Notre Dame guard was not even listed in the preseason MVP market. She now has the second-shortest [MVP odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxwnbamvp/pro-womens-basketball-mvp/kxwnbamvp-26 "undefined"), trailing only [A'ja Wilson](https://time.com/7339270/athlete-of-the-year-2025-aja-wilson/ "undefined"). What began as a rookie filling a superstar-sized shoe ended with Minnesota realizing it had another one in the making—one currently on pace to set the single-season rookie scoring record.

Collier returned in the final game before the break to post 24 points and 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes. In a two-month span, the Lynx's championship odds have jumped from 6% to 42%.

The market has separated Minnesota from the field. History insists on a running mate: 17 of the last 19 WNBA champions posted a top-two regular-season record, stamping the second-place [Golden State Valkyries](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/14/us/valkyries-wnba-playoffs.html "undefined") with a contender's credential. Built from an expansion draft that allowed teams to protect their best players, the Valkyries faced a potential years-long search for their franchise cornerstone. Instead, they have made that absence an edge: nine players log at least 15 minutes per game, and no player averages more than 15 points per game. It's basketball by committee, and the market has rewarded the approach with the fourth-shortest championship odds.

The Lynx and Valkyries spent the first half outrunning their preseason prices. The New York Liberty have gone from setting the pace to chasing it. After opening the season with a league-high 35% implied championship probability, New York's title chances have dropped to 13%, in part driven by injuries to Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally.

Recent WNBA champions tend to share a statistical profile: eight of the past ten finished the regular season with a top-two net rating, seven ranked in the top three in effective field-goal percentage, and five of the past six led the league in offensive rating. The [Indiana Fever check every box](https://stats.wnba.com/teams/advanced/?sort=EFG%5FPCT&dir=-1 "undefined").

A healthy [Caitlin Clark](https://time.com/collection/time100-sports/2026/caitlin-clark/ "undefined") gives the Fever the clearest path to proving that their 9% implied title odds may be lagging behind the team's underlying profile. Last week, Clark became the [first player in WNBA history to record a 40-point, 10-assist double-double](https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/%5F/id/49387955/fever-caitlin-clark-records-wnba-1st-40-point-10-assist-double-double "undefined"), finishing with a career-high 45 points.

Front offices have until August 2 to make a market-altering trade. After that, every odds shift has to be earned on the floor.
