On Saturday night, he coaches against the team and fan base he left behind: No. 7 LSU at No. 8 Ole Miss, the first time the two programs have met as top-10 teams since 1962\. Oxford is not anticipating a thirteenfold crowd surge for any old grudge match. For Ole Miss fans, the problem was never that Kiffin simply left. It was how, when, and where he went. Last September, Kiffin and Ole Miss handed LSU its first loss of the season. It was the first of three losses in four games for the Tigers, a skid that ended with the [termination](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/47113365/lsu-officially-terminates-football-coach-brian-kelly-cause) of head coach Brian Kelly in late October. Kiffin helped put LSU in the market for a new coach. Now LSU was in the market for Kiffin. The Kiffin-to-LSU rumors could not have come at a worse time for the Rebels: Ole Miss was in the middle of its best season in program history, one that saw them post their first 11-win regular season. Kiffin played coy about the rumors, at one point [telling ESPN](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/47023234/inside-lane-kiffin-decision-future-ole-miss), "I love it here." Then on November 17, internet sleuths tracking flight data noticed a private jet linked to LSU making a round trip from Baton Rouge to Oxford. Three days later, [Kiffin tweeted](https://x.com/Lane%5FKiffin/status/1991472475453157751?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com), "See you in Starksville," a nod, albeit a misspelled one, to that weekend's annual Egg Bowl match between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Despite losing the Egg Bowl by 19 points, Mississippi State found a way to twist the knife, playing The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go" over the [stadium speakers](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/47182491/lane-kiffin-final-days-ole-miss-move-lsu) in the final minutes of the game. The next day, Kiffin met with Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter and [informed](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/47182491/lane-kiffin-final-days-ole-miss-move-lsu) him he was leaving for LSU. Kiffin still wanted to coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoff. Carter [denied](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/47182491/lane-kiffin-final-days-ole-miss-move-lsu) him. Kiffin then threatened to take his entire offensive staff with him to LSU and warned assistants that they would not have jobs waiting for them if they did not leave with him that Sunday, [according to ESPN](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/47023234/inside-lane-kiffin-decision-future-ole-miss). Several assistants did go with him, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. Ole Miss became the first team in history to compete in the playoffs without its head coach. They lost to Miami in the semifinal. It does not feel hyperbolic to call LSU-Ole Miss the [most anticipated college football game](https://sports.yahoo.com/video/lsu-ole-miss-most-anticipated-135710224.html) in regular-season history. Beneath the revenge storyline is a top-10 showdown where one team is guaranteed to leave Oxford with its first loss, making an already unforgiving playoff path that much narrower—and a possible blow to LSU that Ole Miss isn't buying. ## LSU vs. Ole Miss Odds Below are the [LSU vs. Ole Miss odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxncaafgame/college-football-game/kxncaafgame-26sep19lsumiss), per Kalshi.  Just when the circumstances surrounding this game seemed incapable of getting any stranger, LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt was unexpectedly listed as "doubtful" on the [injury report](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/49961530/lsu-qb-sam-leavitt-surprise-doubtful-ahead-ole-miss-game) on Wednesday night—and Ole Miss is calling LSU's bluff. Leavitt played last Saturday, throwing for 344 yards in a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. There were no reports that he was dealing with an injury, let alone at risk of missing Saturday's game, until Wednesday night. The [SEC's policy](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/49961530/lsu-qb-sam-leavitt-surprise-doubtful-ahead-ole-miss-game) describes a doubtful designation as "unlikely to play due to significant concerns." According to [ESPN reporter Pete Thamel](https://x.com/PeteThamel/status/2100554035279393079), "No one on the Ole Miss staff is convinced LSU QB Sam Leavitt's appearance as 'doubtful' on the injury report is sincere." Whether Leavitt's designation is Kiffin playing mind games with Ole Miss, or Ole Miss is playing some of its own by publicly challenging it, the market showed some concern: LSU's implied win probability moved from 58.3% to 55% on Kalshi. The market is pricing two questions at once: how likely Leavitt is to play, and whether LSU can survive without him. [Leavitt reportedly participated in walkthrough practice](https://www.si.com/college/lsu/football/positive-sam-leavitt-injury-update-emerges-before-lsu-ole-miss-showdown) on Thursday, and whichever version of the offense that shows up on Saturday is supported by an LSU defense that suffocated Clemson to 145 total yards in the season opener before limiting Louisiana Tech to 139 total yards in Week 2\. Ole Miss has zero questions under center with Trinidad Chambliss, who has the sixth-shortest [Heisman odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxheisman/heisman-trophy-winner/kxheisman-27). Chambliss threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 1 win over a then-No. 24-ranked Louisville team. And in a particularly Kiffin-esque twist, he's partly responsible for LSU having to face Chambliss on Saturday. Two weeks after taking the LSU job, [Kiffin connected Chambliss's camp](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/sec/2026/09/16/lane-kiffin-ole-miss-vs-lsu-football-trinidad-chambliss-appeal-tom-mars/91777647007/) with attorneys who could pursue a sixth year of eligibility, with the hope that Chambliss would then follow him to Baton Rouge. He stayed in Oxford. Saturday may come down to two quarterbacks: the one Kiffin might not have, and the one he tried—and failed—to bring with him. Kiffin made Ole Miss wait weeks for an answer.
