The NBA's offseason Hall of Fame was already stacked: the Banana Boat Crew, emojigate, Kevin Durant joining the 73-win Warriors. But the summer of 2026 has locked up a first-ballot spot before August.

[Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded to the Miami Heat](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/giannis-traders-bit-on-the-boston-pump-fake/ "undefined"). Jaylen Brown landed with the Philadelphia 76ers. Then LeBron James joined him in Philadelphia, cashing an 8.7% long shot and [stunning a market that had drawn $230 million](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/lebron-james-signs-with-76ers-blindsiding-a-230-million-market/ "undefined") in trading volume. Prediction markets have become the league's second transaction wire: roughly $300 million has changed hands on [Kalshi's NBA next-team markets](https://kalshi.com/search?q=nba+next+team&order%5Fby=querymatch "undefined") this summer. Now, traders are analyzing a question—and a controversy—every bit as enigmatic as the player at its center.

Kawhi Leonard was set to return to the franchise he once carried to its first championship. But an NBA investigation has paused the reunion, leaving traders to decide whether the blockbuster deal is merely delayed—or dead.

## Kawhi Leonard Next Team Odds

On June 26, [reports](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7395133/2026/06/26/raptors-kawhi-leonard-opportunistic-return-toronto/ "undefined") circulated that the Toronto Raptors were interested in pursuing a trade for Leonard. Toronto's chances in the Leonard next-team market promptly jumped from 1% to 20%.

Four days later, the [Shams Charania](https://time.com/collection/time100-sports/2026/shams-charania/ "undefined") notification dropped: the [Los Angeles Clippers agreed to send Leonard to the Raptors](https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/2072091819035316691 "undefined") in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round draft picks, two second-round draft picks, and a first-round pick swap. Leonard, 35, commanded a massive haul. But he had just averaged a career-high 27.9 points and earned second-team All-NBA honors, justifying the price tag for the aging superstar. As it turned out, though, the baggage attached to the deal had nothing to do with Leonard's on-court viability.

Last September, journalist [Pablo Torre](https://time.com/collection/time100-sports/2026/pablo-torre/ "undefined") launched an investigation into an alleged salary-cap circumvention scheme involving Leonard and the Clippers. [Torre reported](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OwzYk6OCFM "undefined") that Leonard had signed an endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt company that had received $60 million in investments from Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and held a $300 million partnership with the organization. Torre characterized Leonard's endorsement as a "no-show job," alleging that the arrangement required little promotional work. Leonard's Aspiration deal was worth $48 million—a neat, near-match to the $49 million in guaranteed salary he left on the table by signing with the Clippers over the Raptors in 2019\. Torre's reporting for "[Pablo Torre Finds Out](https://www.youtube.com/@PabloTorreFindsOut "undefined")," which earned him the [2026 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting](https://www.pulitzer.org/winners/staff-pablo-torre-finds-out "undefined"), leveled a consequential accusation: that Leonard and the Clippers had used the endorsement deal to evade the NBA's salary-cap rules.

The Clippers have [denied](https://www.espn.com/video/clip/%5F/id/46161715 "undefined") any wrongdoing. The Raptors initially appeared willing to absorb the uncertainty surrounding Leonard. But on July 9, the [trade was put on hold after Toronto announced](https://www.nba.com/news/raptors-clippers-kawhi-leonard-trade-on-hold "undefined"), "The NBA league office informed us that as a result of the ongoing investigation involving the Clippers, we would assume the risk of any potential outcome of the investigation impacting Kawhi." Toronto's implied chances of acquiring Leonard have since fallen from 99% to 80%.

NBA history offers no perfect comparison, only one cautionary parallel. In 1999, the league discovered a [salary-cap evasion scandal](https://www.espn.com/nba/news/2000/1117/883953.html "undefined") involving Joe Smith and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Smith signed three below-market, one-year contracts with the Timberwolves to preserve the team's short-term cap flexibility in exchange for the promise of a future, long-term contract worth as much as $86 million. The [punishment](https://www.espn.com/nba/news/2000/1117/883953.html "undefined") was severe: then-Commissioner David Stern suspended key Minnesota executives, stripped the franchise of five first-round picks, and voided Smith's contract. The league is currently investigating a similarly structured alleged [arrangement involving Gary Trent Jr. and the Milwaukee Bucks](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/%5F/id/49377882/nba-investigating-bucks-four-year-deal-gary-trent-jr "undefined").

The key precedent: Smith's contract was voided. If the league imposed the same remedy on Leonard, the proposed Clippers-Raptors trade would be nixed, and he would become an [unrestricted free agent](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-could-void-kawhi-leonard-163244368.html "undefined"). That is the catch embedded in this market: even if the trade falls through, the Raptors could still acquire Leonard via unrestricted free agency. Leonard has named Toronto as his [preferred](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/%5F/id/49285660/sources-kawhi-leonard-hires-new-agent-oversee-next-raptors-deal "undefined") destination. Toronto's 80% implied probability in this market, then, is not necessarily a definitive signal that the proposed trade will survive. The market is pricing the destination, not the route: whatever the investigation brings, traders largely expect Leonard to end up back in Toronto.

[Commissioner Adam Silver has said](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/%5F/id/49364590/silver-kawhi-leonard-probe-finish-season-starts "undefined") the investigation "needs" to be wrapped up before the beginning of next season. The league's ruling will establish the modern precedent for where legitimate endorsement income ends and salary-cap circumvention begins—and how severely teams will be punished when they cross that line. For now, traders expect the Leonard-Toronto reunion to survive, even if the trade does not.
