Golden State Valkyries owner Joe Lacob called his shot when the WNBA announced its new expansion team: "[I'm telling you right now, we will win a WNBA championship in the first five years of this franchise](https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/joe-lacob-bay-area-wnba-championship-guarantee/1660502/)."

Easy to dismiss as Bay Area bravado from an owner who purchased the Golden State Warriors in 2010—the year that bridged the Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson drafts—and watched them win four titles in eight years. The Valkyries would assemble their roster through an expansion draft, which allows each team to "protect" six of their players, leaving the expansion franchise to pick from players who put the "depth" in "depth chart." Golden State's inaugural 2025 roster featured zero former lottery picks, two former first-round picks, and one former WNBA All-Star, Tiffany Hayes, whose lone selection had come eight years earlier. Head coach Natalie Nakase, who spent time as an assistant with the Los Angeles Clippers and Las Vegas Aces, inherited a five-year championship timeline that history suggested was more realistic for a mere playoff berth.

Since 1990, there have been 35 expansion teams across the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, and WNBA. Those teams, on average, made their first postseason appearance in their fourth season as a franchise. The 22 teams that reached the championship round took an average of 10 seasons to get there, and the 13 that won a title took an average of 13\.

Golden State reached the playoffs in its first season, reached the WNBA Finals in its second, and is now four wins away from becoming the first expansion team in any of those five leagues since the 1928 New York Rangers to win a championship in its second year.

The WNBA's 2026 newcomers, the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo, went 17-27 and 11-33, respectively, this season. Golden State has defied the expansion timeline and might just overcome its 4% preseason chance of winning the championship. The Valkyries will face the Atlanta Dream, who entered the year with a 14% title chance and are hoping to buck a Finals trend of their own: nine games, nine losses.

The WNBA Finals begin on Saturday, and the market is signaling that an injury to one team's star player could help decide which side completes its improbable championship run.

## WNBA Finals Odds

Below are the [2026 WNBA Finals odds between the Dream and Valkyries](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxwnba/wnba-championship/kxwnba-26), per Kalshi.

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt0dcbc369bbd28ba2/6ad2679f29dc5a5b86b89572/Screenshot_2026-10-16_at_1.06.09_PM.png?branch=main_v1)

[Seventeen of the last 19 teams](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/minnesota-lynx-flip-the-wnba-title-board/) to win the WNBA Finals ended the regular season with a top-two record. Golden State could make it 18\.

The Valkyries have a 55% implied probability and the Dream a 45% implied probability of winning the Finals. The market saw this series as closer to a pick 'em on Wednesday, with the Valkyries at 51% and the Dream at 49%. That's a striking amount of movement for a championship market this close to Game 1, especially while sportsbooks like DraftKings still [price this series](https://sportsbook.draftkings.com/leagues/basketball/wnba?category=finals&subcategory=champion&nav%5F1=finals-winner) as a toss-up.

One possible explanation: Kalshi traders are more concerned about and reactive to Allisha Gray's injury status than the books.

Gray is arguably Atlanta's most important player. She has made four straight All-Star appearances, earned All-WNBA First Team Honors in 2025, and averaged a team-leading 19.0 points on a 46.3% field-goal percentage this season, the best mark among Dream guards. Gray injured her shooting finger in Game 1 of the semifinals against the New York Liberty and missed the remainder of the series. The seven-day break between series looked like enough time to recover, until Gray revealed on Tuesday that she had [undergone a minor procedure](https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/%5F/id/50176371/dream-gray-minor-procedure-hand-ahead-finals-opener) on that shooting finger. Atlanta is [hopeful](https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/%5F/id/50192787/wnba-finals-game-1-dream-valkyries-allisha-gray-finger) she will be available in Game 1, but availability alone is not the main concern. The Finals are not the ideal place to rediscover your jumper, especially against the best defense in the league.

Golden State and Atlanta ranked first and third, respectively, in [defensive rating](https://stats.wnba.com/teams/advanced/?sort=DEF%5FRATING&dir=-1) this regular season. Six of the 10 [WNBA All-Defensive selections](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25511810-angel-reese-aja-wilson-breanna-stewart-headline-2026-wnba-all-defensive-teams) are playing in this series, including Gabby Williams and Kiah Stokes, two of the four Valkyries who played under Geno Auriemma at the University of Connecticut, and Angel Reese, the Dream's blockbuster offseason addition. The double-double machine and "[mebounds](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6430776/2025/06/16/angel-reese-trademark-mebounds-online-criticism/)" [trademarker](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/#caseNumber=99234613&caseSearchType=US%5FAPPLICATION&caseType=DEFAULT&searchType=statusSearch) averaged 20.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 2.0 steals, and went four for seven from deep in the semifinals round.

Two months ago, the Minnesota Lynx, Las Vegas Aces, and New York Liberty had a combined [72%](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/minnesota-lynx-flip-the-wnba-title-board/) chance of winning the 2026 WNBA Finals. Golden State and Atlanta had a combined 14% chance. This Finals pairing is an upset in market terms, but Reese has been "[manifesting](https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/%5F/id/50198159/dream-reese-shy-away-big-stage-wnba-finals)" a Finals run for some time now. Lacob was sure of it before the Valkyries franchise even [had a name](https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/joe-lacob-bay-area-wnba-championship-guarantee/1660502/).

He gave it five years. Golden State might need only two.
