[Fantasy football may bring coworkers and old friends together](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/fantasy-football-qb-rankings-when-to-pass/), but goodwill tends to disappear as soon as the workhorse running backs do. The position offers some of the largest scoring advantages in fantasy—and some of the most expensive ways for a draft to go wrong. Saquon Barkley was a [top-three overall pick ](https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/adp/ppr-rb.php?year=2025)last season but finished as just the RB14 in points-per-reception (PPR) scoring. Running backs pair league-winning upside with first-round risk, making it especially important to weigh projected production against draft cost. Consensus projections provide the standard draft hierarchy, while Kalshi's lightly traded market offers a more speculative look at who could finish as the RB1\. Here's what they suggest about who could finish on top, and which running backs justify an early pick. ## **2026 Fantasy Football RB Rankings** Below are the [odds for who will finish as the top-scoring running back in fantasy football ](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxranklistffrb/top-fantasy-football-rb/kxranklistffrb-27)this season. The market is based on [ESPN's PPR scoring](https://fantasy.espn.com/football/leaders).  Running backs carry more fantasy weight than most positions. Six of the 12 most common players on last season's [ESPN championship rosters](https://www.espn.com/fantasy/football/story/%5F/id/47454522/2025-fantasy-football-champions-most-common-players) were running backs. The year before, Jahmyr Gibbs appeared on [29% of championship rosters](https://www.espn.com/fantasy/football/story/%5F/id/43260187/fantasy-football-2024-most-common-players-championship-rosters)—yards ahead of the runner-up at 21.5%. Both Kalshi's market and [FantasyPros' consensus projections](https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/projections/rb.php?week=draft&scoring=PPR) agree: Gibbs is the back to beat this season. Fantasy managers are drafting him accordingly. [Average draft position (ADP),](https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/adp/qb.php) which measures where a player is typically selected across drafts, shows that Gibbs is being taken as the number one overall pick. Gibbs finished as the RB1 in 2024 and RB3 in 2025 while sharing the Detroit Lions' backfield with David Montgomery. The [Sonic and Knuckles](https://www.nfl.com/news/lions-rbs-sonic-and-knuckles-key-to-sunday-s-showdown-vs-vikings) era is over: the Lions traded Montgomery to the Houston Texans this offseason. Detroit later [signed Isiah Pacheco](https://www.detroitlions.com/news/lions-sign-unrestricted-free-agent-rb-isiah-pacheco) to a one-year, $1.81 million contract, so Gibbs will not have the backfield entirely to himself, but Montgomery's departure still tilts the workload more heavily in his direction. The unnerving part for the rest of the RB1 field is how little volume Gibbs has needed to dominate: he turned the eighth-most touches among running backs into an RB1 finish in 2024, and the seventh-most into an RB3 finish last season. Gibbs may have the inside track, but Bijan Robinson is close enough to turn it into a photo finish. FantasyPros' projections separate the two backs by just 3.4 PPR points, and fantasy managers are drafting them first and second overall. Robinson led the NFL with 2,298 yards from scrimmage last season—and rarely took the scenic route. Robinson finished as the RB2 last season despite scoring only seven rushing touchdowns for an Atlanta Falcons offense that generated the 10th-fewest [red zone scoring opportunities](https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/red-zone-scoring-attempts-per-game). Christian McCaffrey presents the opposite dilemma: the scoring production is proven, but the durability rarely is. McCaffrey was the [RB1](https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/reports/leaders/ppr-rb.php) after scoring 17 touchdowns in as many games last season, though injuries have limited him to just 63.4% of games since 2020\. Gibbs, Robinson, and McCaffrey are the frontrunners in the RB1 race. The draft room may be spotting Chase Brown too much ground: he is being selected as the RB9, but Kalshi's market and consensus projections have him much closer to the crown than his ADP suggests. FantasyPros' projections forecast Brown to score 278.5 PPR points this season, the sixth-most among running backs.
