An event that attracts more eyes than the Super Bowl. The [70th Eurovision Song Contest](https://www.eurovision.com/) begins May 12 in Vienna, Austria: 35 countries, 35 original songs, and one microphone-shaped trophy on the line. Despite commanding [166 million viewers](https://www.ebu.ch/news/2025/05/eurovision-song-contest-2025-record-breaking-reach-as-world-s-largest-music-event-unites-global-audiences) in 2025, Eurovision remains an underexplored phenomenon in the United States. The U.S. tried to make sense of the spectacle, but the effort arrived in the form of failed co-optation: in 2022, NBC premiered _American Song Contest,_ a reality competition show based on Eurovision. The show took what was unique about Eurovision—dozens of countries banding together in an Olympic-style battle of the bands—and reduced it to an undercooked, stateside mess. _American Song Contest_ was cancelled after eight episodes. So, for those unfamiliar with Eurovision: imagine if _Camp Rock_'s [Final Jam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZSTlgc9Zrc&list=RDPZSTlgc9Zrc&start%5Fradio=1) cranked up the zaniness by one hundred BPMs. Norway's 2022 entry, "[Give That Wolf A Banana](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adCU2rQyDeY&list=RDadCU2rQyDeY&start%5Fradio=1)," featured five performers dressed in suits and banana-inspired wolf masks chanting visceral lyrics, "someone give that wolf a banana" and "yum, yum, yum." The contest does not lack depth, however. That same year, Ukraine's folk-rap group Kalush Orchestra won Eurovision with the song "[Stefania](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1fl60ypdLs&list=RDF1fl60ypdLs&start%5Fradio=1)," a tribute to the frontman's mother that came to resonate as a powerful dedication to Mother Ukraine amid Russia's invasion. Messaging has been the contest's foundation since its inception: the [European Broadcasting Union established](https://www.eurovision.com/pages/about-the-eurovision-song-contest/) the Eurovision Network in 1954 to facilitate live programming across the continent. Two years later, the first Eurovision Song Contest arrived, aiming to promote cultural exchange in post-World War II Europe. Now, the contest is responsible for introducing us to moving numbers such as "Stefania" and acts such as ABBA, whose 1974 entry "[Waterloo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XJBNJ2wq0Y&list=RD4XJBNJ2wq0Y&start%5Fradio=1)" launched the Swedish pop group to global stardom. What's in store for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, and what do prediction markets suggest about which country might belt its way to the Grand Final? ## Eurovision 2026 Participants Eurovision's lineup is not strictly based on geography, which helps explain the Aussies' fever dream ["Milkshake Man" performance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ0RdIU%5FG8g&list=RDEJ0RdIU%5FG8g&start%5Fradio=1) last year. The event is open to any active member of the European Broadcasting Union, and contestants are chosen by each country's participating broadcaster. The method to the music varies by country—some hold a national final to determine their representative, while others simply handpick who will grace the stage. Eurovision consists of three live shows: the first semi-final, second semi-final, and Grand Final. France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom will automatically qualify for the Grand Final since they make the biggest financial contributions towards the event. The host country, this year Austria, qualifies automatically, too. The other 30 countries will sing for all their sequins and one of the remaining 20 spots. Eurovision uses a split [voting system](https://www.eurovision.com/newsroom/release/may-we-have-your-votes-please-everything-you-need-to-know-about-how-the-eurovision-song-contest-voting-system-works/), where national juries and public televoters hold equal weight in deciding the winner. Each participating country has a seven-member jury that ranks its top-10 songs and awards points based on order. The public vote follows the same format. By the finale, whichever song has the highest combined point total from each country's jury and televote wins Eurovision. A Danish trader could, for example, place a wager on Greece to win Eurovision, and later rank Greece's entry as the number one song in the televote, directly helping the outcome tied to their bet. One piecemeal effort alone doesn't stand to impact a market or contest that draws in millions, and Polymarket remains [banned](https://help.polymarket.com/en/articles/13364163-geographic-restrictions) in many major European countries, including Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Still, prediction markets' ability to potentially shape Eurovision's results could emerge as a key storyline in this year's contest. Finland, priced at 42 cents, is currently favored to win Eurovision 2026\. Why is a diverse, liquid market this confident in a country that hasn't won Eurovision in 20 years? Well, Finland's Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the national selection process that determines the country's Eurovision entry, introduced the world to "[Liekinheitin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bfwNIYb96Q&list=RD9bfwNIYb96Q&start%5Fradio=1)" by Linda Lampenius and Pete Parkkonen—and the masses think its blend of chaos and performance art could make it a winner. The full UMK "Liekinheitin" performance has drawn over seven million views on UMK and Eurovision's official YouTube pages alone. The caveat: among Eurovision's 30 entries, "Liekinheitin" is one of the few the public has already seen fully staged. The positive early response is a strong signal for Finland's chances, but many market-altering performances have yet to debut. The odds may point to Finland, but Eurovision rejects predictability.
