There are signs a movie is about to get [_John Carter_](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/john-carter-bombed-1235109193/)\-ed. Reviews stay under embargo. The trades report on a troubled production and a ballooning budget. Actors save their least convincing performance for the press tour.

But a studio advertising its own film as "[insufferable](https://x.com/warnerbros/status/2104949461940330943?ref%5Fsrc=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2104949461940330943%7Ctwgr%5E83fa3e550fc3fcb9eca53b16cb9cf82203e926e1%7Ctwcon%5Es1%5F&ref%5Furl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hollywoodreporter.com%2Fmovies%2Fmovie-news%2Fdigger-ad-negative-reviews-tom-cruise-1236717014%2F)" in a last-ditch marketing strategy is a new one.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Tom Cruise, and a [$160 million to 180 million budget](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/tom-cruise-defends-digger-box-office-flop-opening-weekend-1236900982/) is a recipe for a blockbuster. Iñárritu is an Oscar-winning director whose latest wide release, _The Revenant_, made $533.6 million at the box office. Cruise is Cruise—and the [highest-grossing actor](https://variety.com/lists/highest-grossing-actors-box-office/tom-cruise-4/) who's never been on Marvel's payroll.

That collaboration produced _Digger_, a satirical black comedy from Warner Bros. and one of the year's most anticipated releases. _Digger_ was initially forecast to receive an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score on [Kalshi](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxrt/rotten-tomatoes-scores/kxrt-dig). The film had as high as a 72% chance of being [nominated for Best Picture](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxoscarnompic/oscar-nominations-for-best-picture/kxoscarnompic-27) at the Oscars. And just last month, Cruise was the [favorite](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxoscaracto/oscar-for-best-actor/kxoscaracto-27) to win Best Actor.

Then people saw the movie. Well, some people.

Since _Digger_ opened worldwide on October 2, its chances of being nominated for Best Picture have fallen to 13%. The film received a 52% [Rotten Tomatoes score](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/digger%5F2026). The reviews were mixed, but the bad ones bordered on [scathing](https://time.com/article/2026/09/29/digger-review/). Warner Bros. responded with an ad that featured positive reviews alongside negative reviews, including ones that called the film "unpleasant," "very goofy," and "insufferable," before urging audiences to "decide for yourself."

> [](https://twitter.com/warnerbros/status/2104949461940330943)

Decide for yourself what all this meant for _Digger_'s ability to deliver on Cruise's famous line. Anyone expecting audiences to show Cruise the money had not been paying enough attention to Polymarket's increasingly bleak—and remarkably accurate—box-office forecast.

## "Digger" Bombs at the Box Office

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt761ebf3be796e90e/6ac52d2753c5f51068bfe3e2/Screenshot_2026-10-06_at_12.17.00_PM.png?branch=main_v1)

_Digger_'s box-office outlook soured with the reviews. On September 11, [Boxoffice Pro](https://www.boxofficepro.com/long-range-forecast-verity-digger-usher-the-box-office-into-october/) projected a domestic opening of $20 million to $30 million. A week later, it cut that range to $10 million to $20 million before lowering that ceiling to $15 million the week of release. [National Research Group tracking](https://deadline.com/2026/10/digger-tom-cruise-movie-bombs-1237146199/), which began around the same time, initially put the film between $17 million and $23 million.

Warner Bros. [reportedly](https://finance.yahoo.com/media-advertising/articles/tom-cruise-digger-continue-warner-140000171.html) had opening-weekend expectations at $18 million to $20 million. By September 30, the studio was projecting just $12 million to $15 million. Studio forecasts tend to be conservative, giving films room to beat expectations. The projections bottomed out. _Digger_ brought a shovel.

_Digger_ opened to $8 million domestically. [Variety reported](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/digger-box-office-majorly-bombs-verity-scores-1236898521/) the film is "[primed to lose at least $150 million to $200 million theatrically](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/digger-box-office-majorly-bombs-verity-scores-1236898521/)," calling it "[not just one of the biggest bombs of the year but potentially of all time](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/digger-box-office-majorly-bombs-verity-scores-1236898521/)." The revised forecasts and brutal reviews offered plenty of warning, but no one called the ending better than Polymarket.

A day before the film's release, [Polymarket](https://polymarket.com/event/digger-opening-weekend-box-office) gave Digger a 97% chance of opening below $17 million domestically. That alone was not a bold call. Boxoffice Pro and Warner Bros. had already revised the ceiling to $15 million. But in a separate market, traders were more aggressive on just how low _Digger_ would go.

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltbd42d4854df791f9/6ac56576b5b32136b7970e28/Screenshot_2026-10-06_at_12.16.15_PM.png?branch=main_v1)

In a [market covering lower box-office thresholds](https://polymarket.com/event/digger-opening-weekend-box-office-lower-strikes), traders gave Digger roughly a 75% chance of opening at or below $11 million the night before release. The next morning, traders gave the film an 86% chance of finishing the weekend below $9 million. The $8 million opening landed squarely in the outcome traders had overwhelmingly favored. It marks another strong box-office read for the prediction market after [Polymarket traders accurately priced](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/prediction-markets-saw-spider-man-s-box-office-record-coming/) a record domestic opening for _Spider-Man: Brand New Day_ in July.

[Paramount closed its deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery](https://apnews.com/article/warner-bros-skydance-ellison-studio-hollywood-5f4326c083ca2fc084ff399c1b8aa035) on Tuesday. _Digger_ was the final theatrical release for Warner Bros. as a standalone studio, capping a year in which none of its films crossed [$100 million](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/digger-box-office-majorly-bombs-verity-scores-1236898521/) domestically. Paramount has promised that the newly merged company will [produce a minimum of 30 theatrical films annually](https://ir.paramount.com/news-releases/news-release-details/paramount-acquire-warner-bros-discovery-form-next-generation/), spend [$35 billion](https://ir.paramount.com/node/72406/html) annually on content, and [drive long-term job growth](https://ir.paramount.com/news-releases/news-release-details/paramount-acquire-warner-bros-discovery-form-next-generation/)—all while targeting [$6 billion in annual savings](https://ir.paramount.com/node/72406/html). It may be Hollywood's most ambitious forecast yet.
