But the Fighting Irish scored their first win long before Week 1: yet another rewrite of the College Football Playoff (CFP) rulebook. The [CFP selection format](https://collegefootballplayoff.com/news/2026/8/6/sc-aug-2627) has been [revised](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/cfp-changed-selection-format-again-001848396.html) three times in as many years since expanding from four to 12 teams ahead of the 2024-25 season, each version sparking debate over who got in and who was left out. Last season, Notre Dame was the aggrieved party hurling the challenge flag at the CFP selection committee. Despite being in the top 10 of every pre-selection day CFP ranking, [Notre Dame was omitted from the playoff](https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2025-01-09/2025-26-college-football-playoff-schedule-dates-tv-channel-sites) as Miami claimed the final at-large bid and No. 20 Tulane and No. 24 James Madison received automatic berths as conference champions. Notre Dame's athletic director told ESPN that any rankings ahead of the final ones were a "[farce and total waste of time](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/47238381/notre-dame-ad-says-cfp-selection-committee-pulled-rug-farce)" before announcing the program would withdraw its name from consideration for a bowl game. The outrage came with a catch: Notre Dame already had a playoff-friendly provision waiting in the tunnel. Beginning this season, the conference champions from the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12, along with the highest-ranked team from the six other FBS conferences, will receive [automatic playoff berths](https://collegefootballplayoff.com/news/2026/8/6/sc-aug-2627). Seven at-large bids will go to the remaining highest-ranked teams. Then comes the Notre Dame clause. Notre Dame is an independent program, meaning it is not eligible to win a conference championship. Under the [CFP contract](https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/%5F/id/39738322/conferences-notre-dame-agree-new-playoff-deal) agreed to in 2024, Notre Dame is guaranteed a playoff berth this season if it finishes in the top 12, reducing the at-large pool from seven to six teams. No such provision exists for the University of Connecticut, the other FBS independent. The clause that would have saved No. 11 Notre Dame from last year's snub now gives the Irish a chance to reverse the call: reach the playoff at the expense of a higher-ranked team. The odds say the clause won't matter—or that it definitely will. So before college football calls another audible on the format, here's how traders are pricing this season's college football national championship market. ## College Football Championship Odds Below are the [2026-27 college football national championship odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxncaaf/ncaaf-championship/kxncaaf-27), per Kalshi.  Whether Notre Dame's title case rests more on the roster or the rulebook depends on which fan base you ask. Two things can be true: the Irish are talented enough to justify their place atop the odds board at a 13% implied title probability, and the new format and soft schedule give them a forgiving path to the playoff. Notre Dame enters the season ranked [No. 4 in the AP poll](https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings), with [Heisman favorite](https://time.com/partner-content/prediction-markets/the-heisman-s-favorite-problem/) CJ Carr returning for his second year under center and cornerback Leonard Moore, projected to go seventh overall in [ESPN's latest 2027 NFL mock draft](https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2027/story/%5F/id/49684109/2027-nfl-mock-draft-reid-preseason-first-round-predictions-32-picks-manning-moore-carr), anchoring the secondary. But Notre Dame is scheduled to play only three ranked teams this season, the toughest projected matchup coming in South Bend against No. 7 Miami. The Irish will not play a ranked opponent until October 17, giving them plenty of open field to march into midseason undefeated. Ohio State and Texas—a national championship co-favorite and the third-favorite at 13% and 12%—get almost no time to enjoy first-and-goal positioning. They'll meet in Week 2 in Austin, where the loser will take an early hit to its championship odds. Ohio State will face six ranked opponents this season, including No. 2 Oregon, No. 5 Texas, and No. 6 Indiana. Texas will play seven ranked opponents, a gauntlet that gives it the second-toughest schedule in the country, according to ESPN's [College Football Power Index](https://www.espn.com/college-football/fpi/%5F/view/resume/sort/resume.sosremainingrank/dir/asc). The [selection committee accounts for strength of schedule](https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2026-08-11/how-college-football-playoff-works-schedule-selections-rankings-byes-and-more) in its rankings. Sometimes a gauntlet can help as much as it hurts. But an 11-1 Notre Dame team would almost certainly make the playoff, while there may be at-large contenders such as Texas that could plausibly have gone 11-1 against Notre Dame's slate, too. Notre Dame has -800 [odds to make the playoff](https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/ncaaf?tab=cfb-futures), comfortably ahead of Miami and Oregon, tied for second at -320 odds. The national championship favorite is not the No. 1—or even No. 2 or No. 3—ranked team, but the one the market considers most likely to be standing come December. [Indiana entered last season at +10000](https://www.covers.com/sportsoddshistory/cfb-champs/), went 16-0, and won its first national championship in program history.
