The white smoke was still billowing over the Sistine Chapel when Villanova athletic director Eric Roedl texted On Location executive John Anthony: "[Villanova-NDBB in Vatican City??!!](https://www.foxsports.com/stories/mens-college-basketball/villanova-notre-dame-rome-pope-vatican)"

Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and Villanova alumnus, had just been elected the first American pope, and Roedl wanted to schedule a home game. Fans from the [South Side](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/07/business/pope-leo-chicago-white-sox.html) to [Madison Square Garden](https://www.gq.com/story/spike-lee-pope-leo-knicks-jersey) would soon chalk up wins to a papal assist. Villanova was putting its faith in its alumni network. University president Rev. Peter Donohue [texted Pope Leo XIV](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/pope-leo-election-led-notre-100000878.html) about hosting a basketball game at the Vatican, and though that venue was ruled out, the Pope said he would be "[happy to meet with everybody](https://www.forbes.com/sites/timcasey/2026/10/22/how-pope-leos-election-led-to-notre-dame-villanova-basketball-games/)" as organizers scheduled a game at a nearby location.

Thus was born the Eternal City Tip-Off: the Villanova and Notre Dame men's and women's teams will open the college basketball season at [Palazzo dello Sport](https://www.turismoroma.it/en/places/palazzo-dello-sport) in Rome on Sunday. Pope Leo XIV said he's been told [90%](https://www.nbcsports.com/mens-college-basketball/news/pope-leos-alma-mater-villanova-traveling-to-rome-for-hoops-doubleheader-vs-notre-dame) of the crowd will be backing Villanova and 10% Notre Dame, much friendlier percentages than either team—or almost any program, for that matter—will find in the national championship market.

Michigan won the 2026 NCAA college basketball tournament. All five starters from that team began their collegiate careers elsewhere: UCLA, Arizona Western, North Carolina, Texas Tech, and Illinois. Four of those five starters are gone. So is head coach Dusty May, who runs the Dallas Mavericks now.

That's college basketball in the NIL era. The school names and colors stay the same. Everything else is negotiable. Here's what the odds and key trends say about this year's national championship race—and how a Minnesota Timberwolves draft pick wound up at the center of it.

## College Basketball National Championship Odds

Below are the [2027 college basketball national championship odds](https://kalshi.com/markets/kxmarmad/mens-college-basketball-tournament-champion/kxmarmad-27), per Kalshi.

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt7f0f928a5a29cb24/6ae4d710187d31a2079014dd/Screenshot_2026-10-30_at_12.42.30_PM.png?branch=main_v1)

With team continuity increasingly scarce, it's fitting that Duke—a veteran of the one-and-done rebuild—is atop the national championship market at 15%.

Duke lost three players to the 2026 NBA Draft, including No. 3 overall pick Cameron Boozer, then reloaded with three of [ESPN's top 30 recruits](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/rankings/scnext300boys/%5F/class/2026/order/true&sa=D&source=docs&ust=1793400781170958&usg=AOvVaw23lQote-%5FYldXCq1OTSENr), headlined by No. 5 prospect Cameron Williams. The Blue Devils also landed one of the biggest names from the [transfer portal](https://247sports.com/season/2026-basketball/transferportaltop/?) in John Blackwell, who averaged 19.1 points for Wisconsin last season. The rising senior is a massive addition in a college game that increasingly favors upperclassmen.

The last five national champions averaged roughly three upperclassmen in their starting five. True freshmen made up nine of the 25 starting spots on national championship teams from 2011 to 2015, compared with just one of 25 from 2022 to 2026\. The only true freshman to start for a national champion over the past four seasons was UConn's Stephon Castle, who doubled down on "development for thee, not me" by winning NBA Rookie of the Year in 2025 and helping the San Antonio Spurs reach the Finals a year later.

That upperclassmen trend bodes well for Florida, whose [projected starting five](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/florida-basketball-roster-2026-27-starting-lineup-prediction-bench-rotation-outlook-gators/) features one junior and four seniors, with four starters back from last season. The Gators have the second-best title chances on Kalshi at 13% and open the season ranked No. 1 in the [AP poll](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings).

For a tournament that sells itself on Cinderella stories, March Madness keeps saving the last dance for the favorites. Eighteen of the past 25 national champions were No. 1 seeds, and 23 were seeded No. 3 or better. UConn was the only exception, winning as a No. 7 seed in 2014 and again as a No. 4 seed in 2023\. [Twenty-one of the past 24 national champions](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7126456/2026/03/18/ncaa-tournament-favorites-win-duke-arizona/) entered the tournament in [KenPom](https://kenpom.com/)'s top six. October's rankings aren't the same as March's, but here's who starts the season in that company: Duke, Florida, Houston, Illinois, Kansas, and Iowa State.

Kansas snuck into KenPom's preseason top six after adding a former Minnesota Timberwolves draft pick to its roster. Trey Kaufman-Renn spent five seasons with Purdue and was drafted 59th overall by Minnesota in June's NBA Draft. After playing five Summer League games for the Timberwolves without signing a contract, he [sued the NCAA](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/timberwolves-2026-second-round-draft-053822991.html) for another season of eligibility, and a [judge](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/%5F/id/50218887/ex-purdue-f-kaufman-renn-signs-kansas-amid-eligibility-pursuit) has cleared him to play at Kansas while the case continues. The Jayhawks pair him with freshman Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class and [projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NBA Draft](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2027-nba-mock-draft-tyran-stokes-jordan-smith-jr-stefan-joksimovic/). Kansas' title chances have increased about 70%, from 2.4% to 4.1%, since adding Kaufman-Renn.

The market believes in miracles. It calls them seniors.
