Somehow, it's become one of the most enduring traditions in American sports. The [152nd Kentucky Derby](https://www.kentuckyderby.com/) returns to Churchill Downs this Saturday, with post time set for 6:57 p.m. ET. The "Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" carries real stakes: a [$5 million purse](https://www.cbssports.com/general/news/2026-kentucky-derby-prize-money-purse-jockeys/), a shot at racing history immortality, and an entire industry of fans trying to predict the outcome. But more often than not, the winner is rarely the favorite. The last seven Kentucky Derby winners carried an average of 31-1 closing odds, including massive upsets by [Country House](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci%5Fychn7ga0) (65-1) in 2019 and [Rich Strike](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIYD42DV3Ro) (80-1) in 2022\. So, what can the odds, prep races, and post positions tell us about a race that rarely follows script? ## 2026 Kentucky Derby Odds Here's a look at the current [2026 Kentucky Derby odds](https://www.kentuckyderby.com/wager/live-odds/), according to [TwinSpires](https://www.twinspires.com/). Into Mischief has been North America's [leading sire](https://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?rbt=TB&refno=7436720®istry=T&type=Horse) for seven straight years, and his offspring include recent Kentucky Derby winners [Authentic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2j2AhlEUr8) (2020), [Mandaloun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNNlSdkjuqA) (2021), and [Sovereignty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqrDJmmh1AA) (2025). The market is keen on one of Into Mischief's kin coming out on top—but what do the prep races suggest about how the Run for the Roses might shake out? ## The Road to the Kentucky Derby Before any horse makes the gate in the first leg of the Triple Crown, it must survive the [Road to the Kentucky Derby](https://www.horseracingnation.com/content/Kentucky%5FDerby%5F2026%5FRoad%5FTo%5FThe%5FDerby%5FSchedule)—a series of qualifying prep races that determine which 20 thoroughbreds will be represented at Churchill Downs. The top five finishers in each race earn qualifying points, with the highest point totals reserved for the marquee spring preps. Win one of those Grade 1 contests, and a Louisville berth is secure. Come up short in multiple events, and you'll likely be watching the Derby from the barn. Unsurprisingly, the [2026 point leaders](https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/triple-crown/road-to-the-kentucky-derby/2026) are the same horses atop the Kentucky Derby odds board: Commandment (150 points), Further Ado (135), Renegade (125), and So Happy (115). Commandment enters off a dominant win in the Florida Derby—a race famous for producing more Kentucky Derby winners than any other prep. Since 1953, 26 horses who competed at Gulfstream Park have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, and 15 won both the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby. Just last year, Sovereignty placed second in the Florida Derby before winning the Run for the Roses. The Florida win is a key feather in Commandment's cap, but he's still tied with Further Ado for only the third-shortest odds, while his literal brother-from-another-mother, Renegade, leads the way. Renegade is a worthy favorite: he's won back-to-back races, including the Arkansas Derby, and is partnered with top jockey [Irad Ortiz Jr.](https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/thoroughbred-racing/leaders/jockeys/2025) However, might an unfavorable post position spoil the duo's campaign? ## How a Bad Post Draw Trips Up a Good Horse The field's starting positions are determined by a random draw one week before the Kentucky Derby. History suggests the lottery can make or break a contender. Post position 5 (PP5) has delivered the highest win percentage (10.4%) in Derby history. That mid-inside placement gives a horse enough room to avoid traffic on the rail without risking much outside ground loss: 11 of the last 25 winners have come from PP5, PP7, or PP8\. In recent years, though, outer stalls have become an underrated haven: 8 of the last 15 winners have broken from PP15 and beyond. For those horses, the cleaner runway and reduced traffic risks have more than compensated for the extra ground lost on turns. The [2026 Kentucky Derby post position draw](https://x.com/KentuckyDerby/status/2048111103780028566?s=20) was friendly to three of the top contenders: Commandment will break from PP6, So Happy from PP8, and Further Ado from PP18\. In the modern era, it's become the race's toughest assignment: no horse has won the Kentucky Derby from PP1 since 1986\. Renegade's unfortunate post position is already baked into his price, but the favorite drawing the cruelest stall in the gate is nonetheless a fascinating wrinkle in this year's Run for the Roses.
