Gregg Popovich had zero rings. The only Brunson wearing a New York Knicks uniform was named Rick. Four present-day San Antonio Spurs starters weren't around to witness it. Spurs-Knicks still belonged to 1999—the first time San Antonio won a title and the last time Madison Square Garden hosted the Finals.

The Spurs and Knicks will meet up in the 2026 NBA Finals, with Game 1 set to tip off on Wednesday, June 3\. For those who [trust the process](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2729018-the-definitive-history-of-trust-the-process), it's a fulfilling matchup. The Spurs lost their franchise cornerstones in the late 2010s and promptly conducted an "[ethical](https://www.nba.com/news/the-athletic-victor-wembanyama-and-the-ethical-spurs-have-earned-the-right-to-raise-the-bar)" rebuild—one that didn't simply feature a front office capitalizing on lottery balls, but rather discerning that journeyman Luke Kornet deserved a payday, or that the undrafted Julian Champagnie was worth claiming off waivers. Knicks fans spent decades waiting for LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and every superstar in between to turn from rumor into rescue, only to find the King of New York in Jalen Brunson, an undersized guard who, despite an illustrious collegiate career at Villanova University, fell to the second round in the 2018 NBA Draft.

This Finals billing is a perfect snapshot of what a star looks like in today's NBA. Brunson and teammate Josh Hart [host a podcast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lgBm3BlnkA) that doubles as a weekly team-bonding exercise. Victor Wembanyama spent his offseason training with monks at the [Shaolin Temple](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/%5F/id/48818786/how-34-generations-shaolin-warrior-monk-training-helped-build-once-generation-nba-superstar-victor-wembanyama) in China. The extracurricular activities are wholesome. The basketball is disciplined.

At 22, Wembanyama's Western Conference Finals experience was a breakthrough. Not from a pure basketball standpoint—it was evident from the jump that an eight-foot-wingspan-wielding center who can [hit threes](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/M2CRxbJjdpc) from Steph's spot would keep 29 general managers up at night—but in confronting the burden tied to being arguably the best player in the world. On the court, he recovered from a poor Game 5 performance and defied +350 series odds to send the Oklahoma City Thunder packing. Off the court, he received a [warning](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-issued-official-warning-victor-180944504.html) from the league for skipping postgame media obligations. Somewhere in between, he may or may not have asked his teammates to commit "[hard fouls](https://x.com/legionhoops/status/2060168496944927074?s=42)" against the Thunder in garbage time. And through it all, [he does not care](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7321200/2026/05/31/victor-wembanyama-game-7-thunder-nba-finals-crying/) if you see him cry. Lesser franchises strand star talent in situations too small for it. San Antonio has not. Fortunately for the basketball world, Wembanyama will build his legend—personality and all—on the [Larry O'Brien Trophy court](https://www.nba.com/news/trophy-returns-nba-releases-images-of-how-finals-courts-will-look). The biggest city in America is waiting for him.

Seven years ago, New York's starting lineup featured a do-you-really-know-ball list of names: Noah Vonleh, Emmanuel Mudiay, Tim Hardaway Jr., Mario Hezonja, and Enes Kanter. The Knicks still ranked ninth in the league in home attendance. The fans showed up anyway, and kept showing up despite waiting 53 years and counting for a banner. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's recent Executive Order is an apt municipal translation of what this Finals berth means to the city:

Heading into what could be the most-watched NBA Finals on record, will New York's long-awaited moment survive San Antonio's ahead-of-schedule arrival?

## NBA Finals Odds: Spurs vs. Knicks

Here's a look at the [2026 NBA Finals odds](https://kalshi.com/category/sports/basketball/pro-basketball-m/playoffs/games), per [Kalshi](https://kalshi.com/).

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltefcdd85f0997a9c0/6a1f0dc7b60cee9b893f3b58/Screenshot_2026-06-02_at_12.07.02_PM.png?branch=main_v1)

A [Manhattan bar is turning to Kalshi](https://news.kalshi.com/p/kalshi-jeffrey-bar-hedge-knicks-nba-finals-small-business) for a Game 1 promotion: if the Knicks win, every patron's tab is on the house. To hedge the risk, the establishment is placing a $5,000 wager on the Knicks. According to the prediction-market platform itself, the establishment is more likely to profit from a packed house of crushed fans: the Spurs have a 63% implied probability to win Game 1 and a 64% implied probability to win the NBA Finals.

Not including the shortened 2020 season, the last ten teams to win the NBA Finals entered the postseason with a top-6 net rating and top-7 effective field goal percentage. Only two teams met that criteria this season: the Thunder and Spurs.

In that same data set, though, the starting lineup for the winning team had played an average of 272.8 playoff games. New York's starting five has played 338 playoff games. San Antonio's has competed in just 94\. Experience could power the Knicks. OG Anunoby won a championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019\. Mikal Bridges had his welcome-to-the-Finals moment in 2021, scoring 27 points on 8 for 15 shooting in a Game 2 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

In some ways, Bridges is the team's litmus test: he's averaging only 8.6 points across the last ten losses but 17.5 points across the last ten wins. His production has become a shorthand for New York's offensive rhythm—whether the Knicks are moving the ball, sharing the burden, and giving Brunson something more sustainable than a nightly rescue mission. The Spurs can glue Stephon Castle to Brunson's hip and let Wembanyama wait behind the action. Whether Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns can consistently exploit, rather than succumb to, the Spurs' defensive scheme could determine the series.

In a postseason that has not played out according to the odds, the NBA Finals fittingly resist prediction. Brunson has turned clutch moments into a standard, but none in the Finals. Wembanyama, Castle, and Dylan Harper—stars in their third, second, and first seasons—are testing in real time just how high the ceiling is, something no model or statistic can quite project. Twenty-seven years removed from the 1999 Finals, the Spurs are chasing the first chapter of another dynasty; the Knicks are chasing the ending they—and Spike Lee and Co.—have waited decades to write.
