Every summer, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon takes [a week-long bus tour](https://www.wsj.com/finance/banking/jpmorgan-bus-tour-jamie-dimon-a7887112) through one region of the US. He invites branch managers, mortgage officers, call-center workers, and other staff onto the bus to tell him what the big bank can do better, joking that he provides “beer and immunity” to those who join him. “Customer complaints, employee complaints make us a better company,” Dimon [said in San Francisco Monday](https://sfstandard.com/2026/08/03/jamie-dimon-san-francisco-wealth-tax-ai-boom/) as he made the first stop of his 16th annual tour. “What leaders should do is get out and learn from your clients and the people on the front lines.”

Charter’s Kevin Delaney interviewed Dimon onstage at an event co-hosted by our sister news organization, The San Francisco Standard. Here are excerpts from their conversation, edited for space and clarity:

**What's the responsibility of a business to a city?**

I believe it is all of our responsibility as individuals and as businesses to \[lift\] up all of our citizens. Did big business create your bad schools or your crime? No, that's not true. But can business do a lot to help? Absolutely. And what they can do to help is \[create\] local jobs, getting involved in local politics sometimes.

The middle class is bigger and richer. But the bottom 20%? Their wages haven't gone up for 20 years. They're also the ones who—when they drive home—go to neighborhoods \[with more crime\]. These kids are not going to the best schools in the world. They have less medical insurance, more homelessness. And this has been going on for generations now. You can blame Democrats or Republicans, but it is failed policy. Failed policy around education, failed policy around how we handle crime, failed policy around wages and training and a whole bunch of different things.

We should raise our hand and do things that fix it. We put 20% of our branches in lower-income neighborhoods. We use local food and local papers and local art. We hire locally. That lifts up that part of the community. I think I would support doubling the earned income tax credit. If you have a job, you earn more money. That money isn't Big Brother giving it to you. It is in your pocket to spend as you see fit.

It is a real problem about America that…the rich are getting very rich, by the way. That will reverse at one point. Markets don't go to the sky. They go up until they don't. My point is that we should start fixing these problems. Acknowledging them, analyzing them, and fixing them. They are actually fixable.

**You were the chairman of the Business Roundtable in 2019 when you** [**shifted the mandate**](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2019/08/19/lobbying-group-powerful-ceos-is-rethinking-how-it-defines-corporations-purpose/) **of American business to include not just profit, but the other stakeholders, including employees and communities…**

It was actually a reporter who said to me, ‘Your statement \[says\] your only goal is to increase shareholder value.’ I said, ‘Really?’ So he showed me the Business Roundtable statements that had been written 30 years before. I spoke to the board. I said, ‘That's not what we do every day. The average American doesn't know what that means. They read that as greedy companies ripping off customers and employees.’ Which of course, if we did, we'd fail. No business can do that unless they have a real monopoly, which we don't.

You need to earn a fair return. But I tell my own people, I'm not looking to make an egregious return. I just want to do the right, fair thing all the time, and build the business over time. Help your communities, and you'll do very well.

**In your** [**latest shareholder letter**](https://www.jpmorganchase.com/ir/annual-report/2025/ar-ceo-letters)**, you said AI is not a speculative bubble. But you've also** [**said elsewhere**](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/article/jamie-dimon-throws-caution-on-the-ai-frenzy-but-sees-promise-in-space-data-centers-182215908.html) **that maybe it's not going to pay off on exactly the timetable people expect and you’ve highlighted the risks of the private credit involved. Where do you see risks in the AI situation?**

You’ve got to look at the big picture first. AI is going to do wonders for the world. It's going to cure cancer...It'll save lives in hospitals. It'll save lives in cars. It'll find ways to reduce CO2\. It'll do all these amazing things. And therefore we should use it.

When you talk about a bubble, what people are referring to is the amount of investment \[and\] what the return on the investment would be. I don't know if it's a bubble, but I think in total it will pay off. Remember—in total, the internet paid off. You had a lot of things blow up before that happened, but you also had Google. You had all that fiber that got built. It took 10 years longer than people thought.

One risk I think we should not hyperventilate over is the job loss risk. It's an important thing. I understand why people are concerned and they should think about it. My view is \[AI\] may never cause job loss because right now it's causing a lot more job gain. We need more \[talent with skills for\] cyber and AI.

If \[AI\] changes jobs too quick, the solution that we should implement \[is something\] we should do anyway. We should do it today. And that is to get schools—high schools, community colleges, colleges—doing skilling and re-skilling. It’s got to be cheap. It's got to be local and it's got to lead to a job.

There are going to be 8,000 trade jobs available and a lot of them are going to make $150,000 a year. These are advanced jobs—advanced manufacturing, welding jobs, electrician jobs. There are a lot of jobs open today that will not go away because of AI, but they're not being filled because we don't train the kids right.

I would judge \[high\] schools predominantly on one outcome: did \[students\] get a job, and did it pay well?

**Some 25% of American workers are** [**afraid their job is going to go away**](https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/comparing-us-and-global-attitudes-toward-ai) **within five years. And the majority of Americans** [**want more regulation of AI**](https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2026/08/02/voters-deepfake-government-testing-ai-regulation/91065789007/)**. Do you think there should be more regulation? And if there's a tradeoff, should companies prioritize their workers over AI-led automation?**

What did Ronald Reagan say? The most dangerous words in the English language are, ‘I'm from the government. I'm here to help you.’ The other one I heard the other day was, ‘If it moves, tax it. If it's still moving, regulate it. If it stops moving, subsidize it.’ You’d better be real careful about having government come to the rescue of a lot of things because most of what they touch, they don't do particularly well.

I think things need to be properly regulated. The notion that business fights regulations is not true. I have the SEC, the [OCC](https://www.occ.gov/index.html), the Federal Reserve, the [PRA](https://www.doi.gov/ocio/policy-mgmt-support/paperwork-reduction-act), the [CFTC](https://www.cftc.gov/). But you should always say the same about regulations: What's the right level? What are you trying to accomplish?

AI needs some form of proper regulation. There are guardrails that should be built into some of these systems, which a lot of the AI people want to do. The question is, how do you do it? When do you do it?
