In the summer of 2010, [LeBron James went on national television](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afpgnb%5F9bA4) and delivered a now-iconic—and depending on where you live, a long-mocked—line: "I'm going to take my talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat." There, he teamed up with Hall of Famers [Dwyane Wade](https://time.com/collections/time100-health-2025/7279605/dwyane-wade/) and Chris Bosh, and the trio would go on to reach four straight NBA Finals.

The modern NBA superteam had arrived.

[Kevin Durant](https://time.com/collections/most-influential-people-2018/5217617/kevin-durant/)'s [move to the Golden State Warriors](https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/kevin-durant-nba-free-agency-announcement) in 2016 only reinforced the precedent: in the NBA, championships could be assembled as much as they were won. The league has long been shaped by dynasties—so much so that Pat Riley coined and later [trademarked](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/%5F/id/43694932/pat-riley-trademarked-three-peat-okd-use-chiefs) the term "three-peat." But is that age of empires headed for retirement?

From 1984 to 2018, only 10 different franchises hoisted the Larry O'Brien Trophy. Since then, seven teams have raised a banner in as many years. More than a third of the league has appeared in the Finals in that span. The league's latest [Collective Bargaining Agreement](https://nbpa.com/cba), which imposes strict penalties on high-spending teams, has only made sustained success harder to maintain for top teams.

The new age of parity is playing out in real time: if the Detroit Pistons or Houston Rockets win tonight, the opening round of the NBA Playoffs will feature at least five series that extend to six or more games for the first time in nine years.

With the first round nearing its finish, it's worth zooming out: where do the 2026 NBA Finals odds stand now—and which teams' underlying data suggest they're built for a deep playoff run?

## 2026 NBA Championship Odds

Here's a look at the updated [2026 NBA Finals odds](https://polymarket.com/event/2026-nba-champion), per [Polymarket](https://polymarket.com/):

![](https://gcp-na-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt8ea2a56344b02b9d/69f25de250e0cc2ae2cebc6a/NBA_Finals_Odds_Polymarket.png?branch=main_v1)

The NBA is in its longest stretch without a repeat champion since 1988\. The Oklahoma City Thunder are primed to end that drought—at least according to the odds.

[Shai Gilgeous-Alexander](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RCZujP7UHg) dunked on the Phoenix Suns—both on and [off the court](https://www.instagram.com/p/DXsHAfglG05/?img%5Findex=5)—in what was the only first-round sweep these playoffs. The defending champions posted a historic +12.8 net rating (second-best in league history) a season ago and followed it up with a league-best +11.1 mark this campaign. Oklahoma City's dominance has been resilient, too: when [Jalen Williams exited mid-series](https://www.nba.com/news/thunder-jalen-williams-hamstring-game-2) against the Suns with a hamstring injury, the Thunder barely flinched. Hamstring strains are especially tricky due to the [potential for re-injury](https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/exclusive-medical-expert-offers-thoughts-220042867.html), but even with its second option's status in the balance, Oklahoma City maintains a 52% chance to win the title on Polymarket and carries -130 [NBA Championship odds](https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nba?tab=nba-finals) on [FanDuel Sportsbook](https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/).

In each of the past two seasons, the defending champion entered the postseason with the shortest or second-shortest Finals odds, only to be eliminated in the second round. Teams with the wind at their back haven't made good on favorable title odds in recent years. If the Thunder turn this edge into a [second straight ring](https://time.com/7296664/oklahoma-city-thunder-championship-game-seven-nba-finals-recap-analysis/), they'll be the first team in nearly a decade to repeat—a pointed rebuttal to the notion that the NBA dynasty is dead.

## How the Pistons Went From 60 Wins to the Brink

The Pistons have been the biggest surprise of the postseason for all the wrong reasons. The [Cade Cunningham](https://www.espn.com/nba/player/%5F/id/4432166/cade-cunningham)\-led squad churned out an Eastern Conference-best 60-22 record en route to the No. 1 seed, but is now down 3-1 in its first-round series versus the Orlando Magic. Motor City is at serious risk of becoming just the seventh No. 1 seed in NBA history to be eliminated in the opening round. Polymarket currently gives the Pistons just a 30% [chance to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals](https://polymarket.com/event/nba-playoffs-who-will-win-series-pistons-vs-magic).

Look closer, though, and Detroit's downfall isn't so curious—it's just happening earlier than expected.

Effective field goal percentage (eFG%) is a basketball statistic that measures shooting efficiency by adjusting for the extra value of three-point field goals. The formula for eFG% is as follows: Field Goals Made + (0.5 x Three-Point Field Goals Made)/Field Goal Attempts. eFG% has become the preeminent stat in assessing a team's playoff durability.

Dating back to 2011, 29 of the last 30 teams to reach the NBA Finals ranked top-9 in eFG% entering the postseason. Moreover, 28 teams carried a top-7 eFG%, and 21 were especially elite with a top-3 eFG%.

The [Pistons ranked 15th in eFG%](https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&dir=A&sort=EFG%5FPCT) (54.6%) this season. Those struggles are now front and center, as Detroit checks in second-to-last in eFG% through four postseason games.

Flawed teams are not barred from punching above their weight in the playoffs. In the last three years, a No. 4, 5, and 8 seed clinched a Finals berth. Perhaps most striking: there have been more Finals teams ranked outside the top 8 in defensive rating than inside the top 8 in defensive rating across the last decade. Whoever said "defense wins championships" needs a new adage. So, while it's become commonplace for seemingly so-so teams to make a splash in the postseason, elite shotmaking remains a near non-negotiable.

Even if the defensive-minded Pistons claw back against the Magic, history says Detroit would be hard-pressed to make a deep playoff run. It's fitting: in today's NBA, parity has erased even the No. 1 seed's margin for error in the playoffs.
