USAA has been in business since 1922, providing auto, life, homeowners, health, and property insurance exclusively to active duty military, veterans, and their families, serving more than 13 million members nationwide. The company has an excellent reputation for financial stability and customer satisfaction. NextAdvisor named USAA one of the best car insurance providers for veterans.

While not everyone is eligible for a USAA product, experts agree it’s worthwhile to get a quote if you are qualified. If you can secure auto, life, and homeowners insurance at a lower cost, it can help your budget.

Here’s a breakdown of USAA’s product offerings and the benefits and drawbacks of becoming a member.

USAA Auto Insurance

USAA offers customizable coverage options, flexible payments, and online and mobile quotes and policy management for auto insurance. The company reports that drivers save an average of $707 annually when they switch from their current car insurance provider. USAA also offers a myriad of discounts to help policyholders with the cost of their premiums. For drivers who remain accident-free for five years, the first at-fault accident is forgiven.

Types of Coverage

  • Liability coverage
  • Collision coverage
  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage

Cost of USAA Auto Insurance

The cost of your USAA policy will depend on the type of coverage you purchase, your deductible amount, what state you live in, and individual factors such as your age, gender, credit score, home address, and driving record.

USAA also tends to give better pricing to service members who have been in the military for longer periods of time, says Christina Figueroa, an insurance agent with Florida-based agency Fearnow Insurance. “Commissioned officers who have made a career of the military will get premier pricing.”

USAA Auto Insurance Discounts

USAA offers several attractive discounts on their auto and homeowners insurance products, especially for military members, says Seth Lytton, chief operating officer at automotive news site The Detroit Bureau.

  • Good driver discount: You could get a discount for maintaining a clean driving record for at least five years
  • Driving course discounts: Drivers under 21 who complete a driver training course can receive a discount, as will drivers of any age who complete an approved defensive driving course
  • Safe driving discount: In some states, you can save up to 20% for participating in the SafePilot program, which uses an app to monitor your driving habits
  • Multi-vehicle discount: You can save when you insure more than one vehicle with USAA
  • Multi-policy discount: You can get up to 10% off your property insurance when you purchase auto insurance
  • New vehicle discount: You could get a discount if your vehicle is less than three years old
  • Anti-theft device discount: You could save if you have an anti-theft device installed in your car
  • Vehicle storage discount: Get up to 60% off if you’re storing your car, either because you’re deployed or not driving for another reason

  • Mileage-based discounts: If you drive less, you might pay less
  • Loyalty discount: You’ll generally save more money the longer you remain a USAA customer

USAA Home Insurance

USAA homeowners insurance can protect you from the final repercussions of fire, theft, vandalism, or weather-related events and even help cover liability costs and identity theft losses.

Types of Coverage

  • Dwelling coverage
  • Personal belongings
  • Loss of Use
  • Personal liability
  • Other structures
  • Home-sharing coverage
  • Earthquake coverage

Cost of USAA Home Insurance

Your premium will depend on the amount of coverage you choose, your deductible, where you live, the value and age of your home, and even your credit score (in most states). According to the latest Bankrate data, the average premium from USAA for a $250,000 dwelling is $992 annually, which is relatively inexpensive compared to the national average of $1,312 annually.

USAA Home Insurance Discounts

  • Multi-policy discounts: If you bundle your home insurance with auto insurance from USAA, you can save up to 10% on your premiums
  • Claims-free discount: Policyholders who don’t file any claims for five years can receive up to a 10% discount
  • Protective device discount: USAA partners with ADT and offers discounts to homeowners who install their home security systems

USAA Life Insurance

USAA offers both term and permanent coverage to protect you during a period of financial obligation or for the duration of your life. It’s easy to get a quote and apply online, and if a medical exam is required, USAA will send a technician to you.

Types of Coverage

  • Term coverage, which is available for 10-30 year terms and offers fixed payments. If you reach certain life milestones before age 35, you’ll also get the option to add an extra $100,000 in coverage. And you can convert to permanent coverage at the end of your term. A child life rider is also available.
  • Permanent coverage, which is available in three varieties:
    • Universal life accumulator, which offers flexible payments and up to $10 million in coverage, lasts until age 120, requires a medical exam, and costs the least of all permanent policies.
    • Simplified whole life, which offers fixed payments and up to $10 million in coverage, lasts until age 121 and requires a medical exam.
    • Guaranteed whole life, which doesn’t require underwriting, costs the most and offers up to $25,000 in coverage with fixed payments.

Cost of USAA Life Insurance

The cost of USAA life insurance will vary depending on the type and amount of coverage you choose, your age and gender, your current health status, and more. Based on our quotes for term coverage, a 35-year-old, healthy female nonsmoker living in Colorado would pay $12.28/month for a 20-year, $250,000 policy or $21.11/month for a 20-year, $550,000 policy. These rates are much lower than the competition on average.

USAA Pros and Cons

USAA ensures customers are taken care of from beginning to end, says Figueroa. “When there’s a catastrophic event, they’re the first company out there on the field meeting with customers and clients going over their policies and what coverages they have that could help them.”

As “a fully military supportive insurance provider, USAA takes into consideration those in active service who live on a military base and if you need to store your car on the base in particular while you are abroad,” said Lytton.

Depending on where you live, though, you may not have access to some of the perks that USAA membership provides, notes Lytton.

USAA doesn’t always offer the best premiums to all applicants, says Figueroa. Military members may want to compare quotes from different companies before choosing USAA as their insurance provider, she suggests. That said, we found that, on average, USAA’s pricing beat many other providers.

  • Superior claims servicing

  • Generous discounts

  • Financial stability

  • High customer satisfaction ratings

  • Below-average complaints

  • USAA is only available to active service members, veterans, and their immediate family members

  • Benefits vary by state

  • Pricing is not always the most competitive

Other Policies Offered by USAA

  • Renters insurance
  • Rental property insurance
  • Valuable personal property insurance
  • Condo insurance
  • Flood insurance
  • Annuities
  • Umbrella insurance
  • Motorcycle, RV, and boat insurance
  • Small business insurance

Bottom Line

USAA offers great customer service to military policyholders and reliably pays claims. Most policyholders are happy with the company. “They provide good value for the coverages they provide, with 94% of adherents stating they would renew their policy with them,” Lytton said.

High-ranking officers will get especially attractive rates, according to Figueroa. But because insurance premiums are based on so many individual factors, military families should shop around before choosing USAA as their insurance provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for USAA insurance?

USAA offers insurance products to active duty, retired, and separated veterans who were honorably discharged from the U.S. military. Certain family members are also eligible, including children and spouses of USAA members and widows, widowers, and unremarried former spouses of USAA members who joined during the marriage or before.

How do I lower my insurance costs with USAA?

USAA offers several discounts you can take advantage of to lower your rates. You might bundle your home and auto policies, take a defensive driving course, or install a security system in your home or anti-theft device in your car. You can also lower your coverage limits on all insurance products, increase your deductible, and choose term coverage instead of permanent coverage for life insurance.

Is USAA the Best Insurance Company for Military Families?

If you’re eligible for USAA membership, you should include USAA in your insurance rate comparison. USAA has some of the highest customer satisfaction ratings and financial stability ratings from independent rating agencies. However, USAA won’t be the best choice for everyone. You may be able to find cheaper premiums at other reputable companies, so be sure to compare all your options.
