If you have an American Express credit card, you might be able to save some cash on your purchases in the next few months—all while supporting small businesses, thanks to its new “Shop Small” promotion.

Until September 20, you’ll be able to get $5 back after you spend $10 at eligible small businesses in the U.S., whether in person or online. The offer is valid up to 10 times, meaning you can get back up to $50 on your purchases until the promotion ends in September.

Just keep in mind that the offer works as an Amex Offer, meaning you’ll have to activate it on your card and then later use that card at checkout. To do so, log into your account and scroll down until you see “Amex Offers and Benefits.” From there, you’ll see a prompt that says “Spend $10, get $5 back, up to 10 times when you Shop Small by 9/20/20.” Click “Add to Card” and you’re all set.

If you have more than one Amex card, it’s worth checking to see if you’re targeted for the offer on more than one of them—to rack up even more savings. Be sure to enroll all of your eligible cards by August 23.

The $5 credit will be automatically applied, although it will take a maximum of six to eight weeks for it to post.

The category of eligible small businesses is pretty broad. For example, I used my Amex EveryDay credit card to pay for my streaming workout service monthly subscription, and days later, received a $5 statement credit.

Since it only takes a minute or two to activate the promotion, it’s a worthwhile and easy strategy to save some money on many of your everyday purchases while helping out your favorite small businesses in the process.
