Additional Card Details

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card offers quite a few benefits outside points rewards — many geared toward IHG loyalists.

For starters, you’ll automatically gain Platinum Elite status with the IHG Rewards Club program. Platinum Elite members receive perks like 50% boosted rewards on top of base points earned on hotel stays, along with late checkout, priority check-in, complimentary upgrades, and more. With your IHG Rewards Club Premier card, you’ll also get a reward night on your cardmember anniversary every year (worth up to 40,000 points) and your fourth reward night free when you redeem points for a stay of at least four nights.

You can earn another 10,000 bonus points after you spend $20,000 each account anniversary year and make at least one additional purchase after meeting the $20,000 threshold.

Plus, you’ll receive a fee credit for Global Entry or TSA Precheck membership, which is worth up to $100 every four years, as well as protective benefits like baggage delay insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, and purchase protection against damage or theft.

Should You Get this Card?

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is a solid co-branded travel credit card to consider if you prefer to stay at hotels available within IHG’s portfolio when you travel. Here are a few popular hotel brands under IHG:

  • Holiday Inn
  • Holiday Inn Club Vacations
  • Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts
  • InterContinental Hotels & Resorts
  • Hotel Indigo
  • Kimpton Hotels & Resorts
  • Staybridge Suites
  • Candlewood Suites

This broad range of brands and destinations can be useful whether you enjoy the unique amenities of boutique Hotel Indigo hotels or you like the reliability of planning family getaways to Holiday Inn Express properties across the country.

Either way, this card makes most sense for people who plan to travel and stay at IHG locations at least a few times each year — otherwise, you won’t get much value from annual perks like free reward nights or the benefits of Platinum Elite status.

If you don’t stay in hotels often, or you’re not partial to IHG properties, a more general travel rewards card may be a better choice for your future travel plans. Chase Ultimate Rewards points, for example, transfer to the IHG Rewards Club at a 1:1 ratio, so you can use a similarly-priced option like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to rack up rewards for this program without committing to a co-branded credit card.

How to Use the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card

After you’re approved for the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, start maximizing your benefits by spending at least $3,000 within three months of account opening to earn the 150,000 bonus points. Reward night redemptions with IHG start as low as 10,000 points, so this bonus alone can cover several nights.

If that $3,000 spending threshold is steeper than your normal budget allows, consider waiting to apply for this card until you’re ready to book your next trip. Book your stay with your new card to get closer to the welcome bonus, and earn bonus rewards on the purchase at the same time. Then, you’ll have that initial stash of rewards to use on future travel.

This card’s best long-term value is in the points you can earn booking stays at IHG properties. After signing up, you can earn up to 25x points on paid stays with the IHG Rewards Club — 10x points per dollar with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, up to 10x points for being an IHG Rewards Club member (depending on the property), and up to 5x points for having Platinum Elite status.

Pro Tip

In addition to benefits specific to your stays at IHG properties, don’t forget to take advantage of this card’s fee credit toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. When you charge your membership to your card, you can get reimbursed up to $100 every four years.

You can also use your card at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants to earn additional rewards; you’ll get 2x points on these purchases. And when you travel, take advantage of the included travel protections as long as you book your auto rentals and other covered travel expenses with this card.

Despite the draws of free reward nights and elite status, make sure you’ll actually use all the benefits before you apply, and that you’ll get enough ongoing value to offset its $89 annual fee (waived in the first year). And be careful to charge only what you can afford to pay off in full each month. If you carry debt on this card, the high interest charges you pay will easily wipe out the value of your rewards.

Bottom Line

EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

As with all of our credit card reviews, our analysis is not influenced by any partnerships or advertising relationships.

If you’re looking to earn hotel points with the IHG Rewards Club, the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card will give you a huge boost. The sign-up bonus alone is worth several free nights, and you’ll even get automatic elite status just for being a cardholder.

Still, there are other hotel credit cards you can consider (especially if you don’t always prefer to stay with IHG brands) including options from competing hotel loyalty programs like Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt or more general travel rewards credit cards
