Thanks to their perks, credit cards are one of the most important tools in your financial toolbox. They can help you save money on everyday purchases, and also help build up your stash of points and airline miles that you can turn into free, or cheaper, travel.
Many cards also come with dining perks, such as bonus points or credits from some of your favorite restaurants and delivery platforms.
As of Monday, some American Express cards offer a new delivery perk.
If you have The Platinum Card® from American Express, American Express® Gold Card or American Express® Green Card, you now have access to a complimentary membership to Uber Eats Pass for up to 12 months, which can help you save money on food delivery.
Uber Eats is the food delivery service run by ride-hailing platform Uber. With it, you’ll get 5% off and pay no delivery fees on orders over $15. You can also pay no delivery fees on grocery deliveries over $30, depending on where you’re located. The subscription costs $9.99 per month, or $119 for the year — a significant sum especially when considering the annual fees for those cards.
The American Express Green Card carries an annual fee of $150, so the $119 Uber Eats perk almost completely offsets it. The Platinum Card comes with a $550 annual fee, while the Gold Card costs $250.
Some of these cards will also earn you bonus Membership Rewards points for dining purchases. The Amex Gold Card earns 4x on restaurants, worldwide, and at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year in U.S. supermarket purchases, then 1x); the Amex Green Card earns 3x on restaurants. You can then transfer those accumulated points to airlines such as Delta and Hawaiian, and hotels such as Marriott and Hilton, to cover part of your trip.
If you do have one of these cards — or are considering getting one — you’ll need to enroll by December 31, 2021 to enjoy the Uber Eats benefit.
Gold Card members are in for an extra treat, too. Starting in 2021, they’ll also get up to $120 annually (or up to $10 per month) in Uber Cash. You can use this on both U.S. Uber rides and food delivery via Uber Eats. Factor in the 5% you save on $15+ orders with Uber Eats Pass, and there’s the potential for some significant savings.
This is in addition to the $100 airline fee credit per calendar year, which will be available to both new and existing Gold card members until December 31, 2021, a spokesperson for American Express confirmed. While the airline fee credit — which works for things like baggage or seat-selection fees — may not be particularly attractive right now, with travel largely on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, it may be more interesting next year.
If you have one of the qualifying cards, this new dining perk is a quick and easy way to save money on food delivery, while helping support your local restaurants.
