American Express Blue Cash Everyday Full Review
The Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card is a cash back credit card with tiered rewards in select bonus categories.
There’s no annual fee to own this card.
You can earn a welcome bonus of $200 in statement credits after you spend at least $2,000 within six months of account opening (equal to about $333 each month).
There’s also an introductory offer on new purchases and balance transfers. You’ll pay 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers made within 15 months of account opening (16.24% to 27.24% variable APR thereafter).
The Amex Blue Cash Everyday offers bonus rewards in a few categories. You can earn:
- 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per year, then 1% after that
- 3% Cash Back on U.S. online retail purchases, on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%.
- 3% Cash Back at U.S. gas stations, on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%.
- 2% cash back at select U.S. department stores
- 1% cash back on other purchases
Amex Blue Cash Everyday has no annual fee. The ongoing variable APR is 16.24% to 27.24% after the 15-month 0% APR intro period for new purchases and balance transfers.
This card isn’t great for international spending, since you’ll pay a 2.7% foreign transaction fee on purchases outside the U.S. If you pay late or your payment is returned, you may incur a fee up to $40 and penalty APR up to 29.99% (See Rates & Fees) .
How to Use American Express Blue Cash Everyday
To maximize your rewards with this card, be sure to swipe it everytime you go to the supermarket and fill up at the gas pump. You’ll get that 3% cash back boost at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%), and 2% at U.S. gas stations. If you regularly shop at U.S. department stores like Macy’s, Belk, Kohl’s, Nordstrom, and more, use this card for 2% cash back on your shopping, too.
You’ll earn cash back as Blue Cash Reward Dollars that you can redeem for statement credit, gift cards, or merchandise whenever you have a balance of $25 or more.
You can also benefit from the introductory 0% APR on new purchases for 15 months from account opening (16.24% to 27.24% variable APR thereafter) if you have a large purchase to make and you’d benefit from the flexibility of a 15-month buffer to pay it off. But if you’re simply looking for a great 0% interest intro offer, there are better options to consider.
Even after the intro period, you can take advantage of Amex’s Pay It, Plan It feature, which allows you to pay down purchases under $100 any time within a billing cycle (Pay It) or select larger purchases greater than $100 to pay via payment plan with a fixed term and fee (Plan It).

Is American Express Blue Cash Everyday Right for You?
American Express Blue Cash Everyday is a good no-annual-fee card for everyday rewards categories. But if gas and groceries make up a large portion of your budget, you might get more value from its sister card, the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. Blue Cash Preferred offers cash back in similar categories, but at a higher percentage and an annual fee of $95.
Grocery and Gas Benefits
The Blue Cash Preferred offers one of the highest rates on the market for cash back at U.S. supermarkets — 6% (up to $6,000 in annual spending, then 1%), plus 6% on eligible U.S. streaming subscriptions and 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and on transit that can be redeemed as a statement credit. If you’re interested in the Blue Cash Everyday as a gas and groceries card, consider leveling up to the Blue Cash Preferred.
Based on national average spending data, you could earn $302.96 in cash back with the Blue Cash Preferred each year (after accounting for the annual fee), compared to $242.95 with the Blue Cash Everyday. That’s a difference of $60 each year even with the added fee — and would be even higher if you’re able to max out the U.S. supermarket category.
Also keep in mind the discrepancies between the two card’s additional categories: Blue Cash Everyday also rewards 2% cash back at select U.S. department stores, while Blue Cash Preferred offers an additional 6% back on select U.S. streaming services. Before applying, evaluate your own spending to see which you may benefit from more.
