At the time, she was living in Tampa, where they both attended high school, and he was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. They were engaged, and hadn't seen each other in six months. "I was really anxious, so I put those pictures together, pretty much saying that the \[distance\] wouldn’t tear us apart," she tells Time. "It's an 'I'm almost there!' photo." After he was medically retired from his last Iraq deployment, “We went through some seriously rough times which included battling his PTSD and becoming homeless for three months with our two young daughters in 2012 because I could not find a job,” she says. “We have been married 7 years now and on our feet. They had just filed a federal lawsuit against the VA for refusing to give Tracey, who suffered from a neurological condition, and her spouse disability benefits because they’re in a same-sex marriage. A year and a half later, they won the suit, which ruled the benefits couldn’t be denied to same-sex spouses. Tracey says, “We are happy that not only is Maggie able to receive the benefits due to her from Tracey's military service, but other veterans living in marriage equality states will also have this same opportunity."
