## Transcript

Hi, I'm time. Reporter Mariah spada and I'm joined by founder and CEO of Misfits Market. Avira mesh, welcome to time, 100 talks. Thanks, Rob Mariah. You have to have you ever be in 2018? You launched misfitsmarket known to deliver, always delicious, sometimes normal-looking produce to customers homes. What problem have you identified with food waste? And how does Misfits Market provide a solution to that? Well, there's two part of the problem. We're trying to tackle one is just a massive amount of food. Waste it exists in the US and globally, it somewhere, between Thirty to forty percent of the food that we grow in.

The US doesn't actually make it to, to have sold. It gets thrown out wasted somewhere along the way in the food supply chain, the first and foremost, we're trying to tap into that we're going to tackle that food waste problem and importantly, turn that that waste angle into access and affordability for consumers to the other part of our kind of tackle is healthy food access and portability. If you look at the number of Americans that live in says, it sent, it has any food, deserts lot, 35 million folks across the country. There are so many zip codes that just don't have access to fresh healthy food.

And we think that by tackling food waste in its unique way and supply chain driven Manor, we're going to be able to also Drive affordable access to healthy food Description box and online grocery store, the offerings have changed quite a bit since we launched by four and a half years ago back. Then it was just ugly produce in a box. And in order a surprise box of ugly produce today. Each week is it's a Weekly subscription each week. You go online and you customize, your grocery box. We have over 700 different items you can buy and it even given weeks and it ranges from an ugly fruits and vegetables.

So, these are things that we sourced from Farmers for a ride. A reason, you know, I might be apples, are a little too small or tail that has like Miss coloring on it or a butternut squash is shaped a little bit wonky. So there's a huge selection of produce and if that were known for our fresh organic produce selection, we can also buy a variety of other grocery, Dairy, Meat and seafood Deli bakery at 10th, Street stables. And what things like peanut butter and olive oil now as well. So it's either, the goal is for you to be able to fill your entire basket, and I'm worth much. Is it possible every week with high-quality Misfits groceries, and you click a button.

You order there's a delivery day that that that you choose when you sign up as well and the boss gets delivered to your doorstep on metal everyday. That's quite a variety of. What would you say to those that are curious about whether this option of grocery shopping is financially feasible, Yeah, I think it's a very relevant question especially in today's hyperinflationary and buy more or in seeing four-decade High inflation especially in food. And then what's interesting is a lot of online grocery models are not affordable. Fundamentally the customer has a premium to go order flugal on mine. We're the exception to that rule because of the way we Source because we're buying ugly, Misfit, you know, groceries from from across ecosystem or rescuing food, we're able to buy that food at a substantial discount, compared to waterproof a grocery store.

A bill to buy Dad and then we pass on those savings to the consumer. In general are products are priced 20 to 50% cheaper than a grocery store in this era of the wild food inflation. We actually think that the offering is even more compelling for the average consumer because you're going to save 20% of the grocery bill and have something delivered to your doorstep. You've identified so many ways to help reduce food waste and provide customers with affordable. Sustainable, groceries, as you explained, what are ways the Misfits market system is also benefiting Farmers directly. We work we worked with hundreds of farmers grow as producers in the supply chain over the past few years.

Importantly, we tend to work really far Upstream. We work directly with the farmer for the producer is not a lot of it. Just for the middle, the middle men in between, it's been fascinating. So the thing we hear most often from our former partners is simply how much were able to purchase from them and how helpful it is because this is a new Revenue stream for a lot of them right before, before Misfits and platforms. Like misfits, there wasn't a scalable sales channel for the misfit produce or the olive oil can to have label print upside down or, you know, items that were in last season's packaging.

That it, that a manufacturer sitting on it, on a huge amount of inventory for There were not stealable channels and so so farmers. And Growers manufacturers, they would try to sell horses and he's in small pieces here and there, but never enough to actually make a profit. And so we've been able to step in and pray. Created Bible, scalable sales channel, for all of these, for all of the time, they spit inventory. And for the farmers, you know, transfer Elliot. It's been, it's been a new Prophet channel for them. It's been a bit of a way for them to kind of compete in a, in an otherwise low-margin.

Super competitive industry, David Nail to create a new stands for sale. Shannon Papa Channel Through us. Create your startup has also been sure to include Urban centers and suburban and rural areas and its work. And he speaks of the importance of these areas having access to organic produce and sustainably sourced trees. Definitely let you know. I think, I think this is one of my Misfits about three pillars of sustainability, affordability, and accessibility. And we talked about before, I think what you just mentioned. I think those are those are right in between the affordability and accessibility colors.

I think that so many grocery Commerce platforms. Today have been built around just the, you know, that the affluent consumer who already has access to 20 other options and what no one's really built for is the rest of the country that historically has been ignored and it certainly doesn't have access and ultimately that's I think what we're trying to do here it is. You have Urban food deserts. You have Suburban markets that are located further out from grocery store is where folks have to drive 45 minutes or an hour on Sunday afternoon to go to the grocery store and you have a rule markets which there are there are consequences emailed us and said before.

Misfits the nearest grocery store with a two and a half hour drive for me, write it in those. The markets. It's it's it's it's mind-blowing sort of how how impactful it's been there because those are customers at put aside organic produce for produce in general that I have to go drive two and a half hours. That's all to me. Why for us being able to serve Urban suburban and Rural markets. And so important is because it is a meaningful way for us to go tackle that accessibility pillar Absolutely, you know, Young Folks are our future leaders, what are ways that Misfits Market is trying to tap in and access that demographic?

Yeah, it's a few things sometimes and one is purely as an employer, you know, we're we're now, we're not over 3,000 employees across the entire organization nationally. And we are wearing Mission driven brands that people are excited about because we are tackling food way. We're trying to build more affordable, accessible food future for folks as well. And so, you know, first and foremost, we're trying to engage a l, Hemi party organization, and when I feel. So, it says, whether it's for 6 months, to years, 5 years, you know, we think we can provide a lot of value, and they can go start their own companies and do.

Whatever else I have to do, is we had quite a few ask message, Mark employees. Go start their own companies and have done for me to see while. And then the other part two, it is, you know, we are, we're a serious brand because of the serious problems were trying to tackle but there's also very fun elements to The Misfits Market, ethos and we try to make, you know, the idea of Misfits groceries, fun and compelling. And so we've had a lot of Younger leaders on on social media platforms thinks that we're still be folks that are really passionate food. Waste Warriors in their local ecosystem, and they'll become almost like misfitsmarket spokespeople in their neighborhoods.

Be like, and and, and, and tell everyone about what Miss B is and how it works and all that. So those are two of the ways that that's really comes to mind. As someone who successfully expanded a start-up, what advice can you give to those looking to use their skills and talents to make a larger impact on the world? The first one that comes to mind is I think that it's easy to It's easy to sort of give up when you're facing a very hard problem. To think about what we've been trying to do here, and then it hasn't been without its significant challenges along the way. We're trying to go Taco for a 200 girl, industry grocery.

We're trying to build value in accessibility in the food supply chain, which is a low-margin low-cost perishable infrastructure, heavy sort of supply chain. We're trying to go in and ate there. And so when I first started misfits, there were a dozen people that said hey what you're trying to do is impossible, you're wasting your time and then you should be focused on building something else in this is going to get. I'm stuck in the energy so I can get her to look back, 5 years and regret these started in. I had dozens of people close metaphors, tell me that. And I think the first thing that comes to mind is if you are passionate about a problem and you see something out there in the world needs to be changed, run at that as hard as you can.

And don't let go to tell you that you can't do it because I think Set the default answer, especially when a problem has been solved before. The default answer is, it hasn't been followed and so, it cannot be solved. And I think that, you know, young folks who are were able to look at problems with a different way. Probably have the ability to solve a problem that other people thought were on saw the ball and so sheer grit and determination. I think this is going to be super, super important. And so I know that don't give up. A thing is very cliche, comment for free on her, folks are in companies but that has been one.

That's been one of the most important things I thought back and they're probably been 10 different places along the journey that I could have said, this is too hard. I should stop doing it but I didn't cuz I care deeply about the problem. And I, I believe there was a solution and I think that that's helped us a lot while I'm away. It's a grade. What do you and the Misfits Market Team? Hope for the future of Agriculture and food sustainability. My Hope, Is that what we're doing here? Or we started to do rather than this fits can be inspiration for other brands, other leaders and other folks, go to tackle issues in the food supply chain efficiencies in the food supply chain of masses as well, and as it as big, as we look on paper message Market.

We are a drop in the water when it comes to tackling the, you know, that the global food waste problem. We're tiny, and so another place I get all the time as I go. What about competition? Are you afraid of other people doing this? My aunt always has. No, I want other people to do this. I want as many people to go tackle, food waste and sustainability in the food supply chain and food affordability and access as possible through as many angles as possible. I think they're happy companies that look at us and say why can't I do? What Miss B is doing with restaurants? Why can't I do it? Misfits is doing with supermarket.

Can I do with Misfits is doing with wholesale channels? And so the hope is that overtime. What happens is the, you know, over the Innovation that we've shown can Inspire Innovation across the entire stock from the supply chain and that results in kind of long-term efficiency because they're still, you know, it is that that food waste number was 40% four and a half years ago. It's probably 39.99% today, so they're still a tremendous amount to go tackle out there. Absolutely. But with initiatives like misfitsmarket, we are certainly getting closer to that brighter future. Thank you. I'll be for joining time.

100 talks. Thank you so much for having me.
