An UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador since 2019, she has used film and television to amplify refugee voices and narratives. Having participated in field missions in Malawi, Kenya, and South Sudan with UNHCR, Mbatha reflected on how difficult it is to experience a refugee camp, because you’re “coming out of your own reality where you have resources and you have the privilege,” she said on the TIME100 Next red carpet on Oct. 30. “You step into a refugee camp, and there's a young girl in a hospital… a makeshift hospital. She's 14 years old, and she's holding a newborn child. How do you navigate those feelings of empathy when you have to interact with them? Those are the things that when you experience them, it's a provocation to do good work,” Mbatha told TIME. These in-person experiences have allowed Mbatha to see the humans _behind_ the statistics. “Each one has their own individual story and their own individual dreams,” she noted. For Mbatha, seeing and learning on-the-ground allowed her to understand the people at the center of the refugee crisis. The actor cited the importance of access to education, noting that it typically cannot be provided by any single person. Instead, it takes a village. Historically, Mbatha has been vocal in advocating for greater private sector investment in refugee inclusion, supporting the 36 Million Solutions: Africa Private Sector Forum on Displacement held in Kigali, Rwanda [in 2021](https://www.unhcr.org/about-unhcr/our-partners/prominent-supporters/goodwill-ambassadors/nomzamo-mbatha). She argues that the private sector should contribute to public systems and sectors by building systems that are self-sustaining. Mbatha noted that she gets encouraged to keep moving forward, especially when young girls tell her they have a degree or job now as a result of efforts she has participated in.
