The [annual TIME100 Next list](https://time.com/7319452/how-we-chose-the-2025-time100-next/) features notable people on the rise in fields from business to entertainment, politics, and health. The soiree on Thursday night included a performance by 22-year-old [dancer-turned-songwriter](https://time.com/7321459/tate-mcrae-interview-time100-next/) and one of this year’s honorees [Tate McCrae](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2025/7318870/tate-mcrae/), who performed the first acoustic cover of her new song “Tit for Tat” and pop hit “Revolving Door.” The evening was also a unique opportunity for advocates, athletes, actors, artists, founders, executives and world leaders to share in conversation. Throughout dinner, five honorees gave toasts to their roots and also to the future. Here’s a rundown of their remarks: ## Lainey Wilson on staying planted The first toast came from country artist [Lainey Wilson](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2025/7318891/lainey-wilson/), who took home her first Grammy for _Bell Bottom Country_ in 2024\. Wilson reminisced about her journey in music, starting as a fifth generation farmer’s daughter from the Village of Baskin in Northeast Louisiana, playing in small bars impersonating Hannah Montana, to performing for [record-breaking crowds](https://www.syracuse.com/statefair/2025/08/the-31-largest-crowds-in-nys-fair-concert-history-4-artists-make-the-list-twice.html). Wilson expressed gratitude for her upbringing, which she said taught her to stay grounded in her roots, appreciate her community, and practice patience and perseverance. “What I’ve learned is, you can’t rush the growing season. You just have to keep showing up, you have to keep nurturing your gift, keep believing that's what is meant for you, is going to find you when it's the right time,” Wilson said. “Stay planted, water your roots. Keep searching for the light, because when your season comes, people will taste the fruit of your faith, and the world will be a better place because of it.” ## Brandon Sorbom on the energy-driven future [Brandon Sorbom](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2025/7318813/brandon-sorbom-bob-mumgaard/), co-founder and chief scientific officer of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a company bringing the vision of virtually limitless clean energy to life, toasted his fellow honorees in the room working to make the world a better place. For fusion energy, “the easiest way to think about us is we are building a star in a jar – literally,” Sorbom said. His company, he added, is currently putting the finishing touches on a demonstration device that’s going to harness fusion energy, and, by the end of the decade, CFS is aiming to build a power plant in Virginia that can generate and feed fusion power into the grid. Sorbom quoted one of his favorite science fiction authors, William Gibson, who said that “the future is already here. It’s just not evenly distributed.” Access to energy is linked with a higher quality of life, Sorbom added, and in a world running low on resources and high on demand for power, solving this challenge with fusion will “change the world.” “It's been an honor to meet so many people tonight who are also working to make the world a better place in each of their respective domains,” Sorbom said. “And so I’d like to raise a toast to all of us who are working on our own pockets of the future that are already here, and working to evenly, as opposed to unevenly, distribute that future.” ## Tramell Tillman on honoring his ancestors _Severance_ actor [Tramell Tillman](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2025/7318892/tramell-tillman/), who became the first Black person and the first openly gay person to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series [in September](https://time.com/7316893/tramell-tillman-wins-emmy-severance/), toasted his grandparentsJames and Pearl Hill, who began their life together in the countryside of Prince George, Va., in 1947, raising a family while leading the local NAACP to ensure people of color exercised their right to vote during Jim Crow and that their children could receive a quality education. “I am my ancestors’ wildest dreams. So this toast is for the ancestors, those brave souls who wouldn’t settle for what was handed to them. Whose commitment to excellence, equity, humanity soared them from obscurity and right into history. Whose contributions not only make for a great story to tell at parties but encourage us all to make the world a better place,” Tillman said. “May their work never be forgotten and their voice never silenced.” ## Emi Mahmoud on hope in the face of genocide Poet, activist, aid campaign founder, and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador [Emi Mahmoud ](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2025/7318855/emi-mahmoud/)dedicated her toast to those impacted by the Darfur genocide in [Sudan](https://time.com/7313600/sudan-crisis-shadows-photography/)—a country experiencing what some have called the “[most devastating humanitarian and displacement crisis](https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/02/1160161)” on the planet, causing the [displacement](https://www.cfr.org/global-conflict-tracker/conflict/power-struggle-sudan) of more than 14 million people. Some 150,000 people have died since the start of the 2023 conflict (though death toll estimates largely vary). Still, the Sudanese American, who said she personally lost more than 20 family members in the war, centered hope in her speech after she performed her poem, “People Like Us.” When Mahmoud wrote that poem—in which she described going to school with the “weight of dead neighbors on my shoulders” and her first time seeing bomb smoke—she did not know what the future would bring. “Hope changes you. It helps you take pain and wield compassion, take sorrow and wield resilience,” she said Thursday night. “Every time I sit with a fellow refugee or any one of our survivors, … I feel grounded, and I realize that we can imagine a future where every person can be treated with respect and with love and with care in the face of genocide, in the face of erasure, daring to hope, daring to exist.” ## Jonathan Bailey on togetherness and celebration Actor [Jonathan Bailey](https://time.com/collections/time100-next-2025/7318883/jonathan-bailey/), who has charmingly commanded the theater stage, small screen, and now Hollywood blockbusters, dedicated the last toast of the night to togetherness and communal experiences.
