Nicolai Dirchsen Arvind Krishna, CEO, chairman and president of IBM, used his acceptance speech at the TIME100 AI Impact Awards on Monday to acknowledge pioneering computer scientist and mathematician [Claude Shannon](https://time.com/4311107/claude-shannon-100-years/), calling him one of the “unsung heroes of today.” Krishna, who accepted [his award](https://time.com/collection/time100-impact-awards/7212505/time100-impact-awards-arvind-krishna/) at a ceremony in Dubai alongside musician Grimes, California Institute of Technology professor [Anima Anandkumar](https://time.com/collection/time100-impact-awards/7212504/time100-impact-awards-anima-anandkumar/), and artist [Refik Anadol](https://time.com/collection/time100-impact-awards/7212503/refik-anadol-ai-time-impact-award/), said of Shannon, “He would come up with the ways that you can convey information, all of which has stood the test until today.” In 1948, Shannon—now known as the father of the information age—published “A Mathematical Theory of Communication,” a transformative paper that, by proposing a simplified way of quantifying information via bits, would go on to fundamentally shape the development of information technology—and thus, our modern era. In his speech, Krishna also pointed to Shannon’s work building robotic mice that solved mazes as an example of his enjoyment of play within his research. Krishna, of course, has some familiarity with what it takes to be at the cutting edge. Under his leadership, IBM, known as a pioneer in artificial intelligence itself, is carving its own niche in [specialized AI](https://time.com/7212505/time100-impact-awards-arvind-krishna/) and invests heavily in quantum computing research—the mission to build a machine based on quantum principles, which could carry out calculations much faster than existing computers. The business also runs a cloud computing service, designs software, and operates a consulting business. Krishna said that he most enjoyed Shannon’s work because the researcher’s “simple insights” have helped contribute to the “most sophisticated communication systems” of today, including satellites. Speaking about Shannon’s theoretical work, which Krishna said was a precursor to neural networks, he noted, “I think we can give him credit for building the first elements of artificial intelligence.” _The TIME100 AI Impact Awards Dubai was presented by the World Government Summit and the Museum of the Future._ ## Transcript It's quite a privilege to be here standing with the researchers as well as with the artists. I am here because I reflect the work of all of my colleagues at IBM. So actually the thanks and the honor really goes to them. So let me start there. Um, I'm actually going to channel a little bit all of the work we do today, all of the science, all of the engineering stands upon the shoulders of giants. And one whose name is probably not well known to most people in this room, maybe a couple is is a researcher called Claude Shannon. He, Shannon did his work in the 1940s and 50s and all that we enjoy today, from mobile phones to smart phones to computing, is actually based upon his insights. His insight was digital communication. Analog communication. Let's remember he was in the era of Am and FM radio. That was communication, and he combined the technologies with insights that are incredible with really great and simple insights. He managed to say that these are really one, and he could come up with the ways that you can convey information, all of which has stood the test until today. He also, given that this is artificial intelligence, decided to play around with what I could. He build and he was imagining what today we would call neural networks, but very small ones. He designed mice using mechanical switches in the 1940s that would try to find their way out of a maze. I think we can give him credit for building the first first elements of artificial intelligence. He was also playful. He would design puzzles. He would, uh, describe things to other children. He would teach at MIT. He would work at Bell Labs. He greatly helped the efforts during World War two. So quite eclectic in all his tastes. But the reason I so enjoy his work is because it's really simple insights. He can then go down all the way until you were building the most sophisticated communication systems, including satellites, including undersea cables. What became known today in the world over as the fiber optic networks we rely upon. So I would give him a huge shout out, but he is also one of the unsung heroes of today.
