ABU DHABI—Kate Kallot is working to ensure that the Global South isn’t just benefitting from artificial intelligence, but also shaping its future. She’s the founder of Nairobi-based AI company Amini, which is building the data and infrastructure needed to do that.

On Dec. 5, Kallot received a TIME100 Impact Award in Abu Dhabi, in recognition of her efforts to build an AI ecosystem that serves the Global South. Others who joined Kallot in being honored for their work included McLaren CEO [Zak Brown](https://time.com/collections/time100-impact-awards/7335864/mcclaren-zak-brown-time-impact-award/), investor and Reddit co-founder [Alexis Ohanian](https://time.com/collections/time100-impact-awards/7335863/alexis-ohanian-womens-sports-impact/), and Authentic Brands Group founder [Jamie Salter](https://time.com/collections/time100-impact-awards/7335865/jamie-salter-authentic-brands-impact-awards/). “I am tremendously honored and humbled to receive recognition alongside the phenomenal leaders we’re celebrating tonight,” Kallot told the crowd.

With 62% of the continent's population offline, Africa is often left out of the world’s data ecosystem. Since founding Amini in 2022, Kallot and her team have aggregated localized data from over 1,000 sources to predict agricultural yields and identify climate risk—helping reduce farmers’ premiums across East Africa by 30%. More recently, Kallot has sought to address the Global South’s lack of computing power, crucial for training and running AI models locally. Amini has partnered with the Barbados government to supply the Caribbean nation with micro-data centers inside shipping containers. It has plans to deploy the containers, which can be set up in months, in six more countries.

“My impact journey started with one man,” Kallot said, crediting her late grandfather. Educated in France and the U.S., he returned to the Central African Republic driven by a belief that “the highest use of his talent was to serve his own people.” After he was assassinated in the 1970s by the country’s dictatorship, Kallot's family fled to France where she grew up. Kallot went on to work for some of the biggest names in the technology industry, including Nvidia, Arm, and Intel, before she too decided to return to Africa. “I was facing a question many of us eventually face. ‘What does it mean for me to go home and to serve?’”

Kallot stressed that AI sovereignty mustn’t be merely a buzzword. “At Amini, that means four things: The power to control your data, your compute, your models; the power to educate and train your own people; \[...\] the power to generate value at home, not only export it; and the power to protect what is sacred.”
