2025 Penske Media

Jamie Salter has built a multibillion dollar empire by brokering deals that connect culture to commerce.

He started with snow. In 1994, after running one snowboard company, he took another, [Ride](https://thinkempire.com/blogs/news/10-things-you-didn-t-know-about-ride-snowboards#:~:text=On%20May%206th%201994%2C%20Ride,another%2075%2C000%20units%20are%20released.), public—the first of its kind on the Nasdaq—four years before the sport's Olympic debut. Today, Salter runs [Authentic Brands Group](https://corporate.authentic.com/), which specializes in acquiring and rejuvenating the intellectual property of famous brands in decline; preserving their identities while streamlining how they operate. Authentic owns over 50 brands—including Reebok, Champion, Forever 21, and Volcom—and the IP of celebrities, living and dead, like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Allen Iverson. Over 15 years, it has [grown](https://www.licenseglobal.com/rankings-lists/top-150-leading-licensors) to become the second-largest consumer licensing company in the world, trailing only Disney. “I didn’t invent the licensing business,” says Salter. “I just made it way better.”

The playbook is simple. Authentic takes the lead on marketing its brands, and outsources virtually everything else—like manufacturing and distribution—to its partners via licensing agreements. “We’re an asset-light company,” he says. Its 600 employees are responsible for managing IP that collectively generates over $32 billion in retail sales annually. Salter aims to push that number to $100 billion within the next five years. With the entertainment industry leaning more heavily on IP than ever—from Barbie and Lego blockbusters to the endless stream of musical biopics—Salter’s control of an ever-expanding brand empire positions him as more than just a licensor; he’s becoming a cultural kingmaker.

“We built this great merchandising and licensing machine,” says Salter. “At the same time, we built a great entertainment company.” Through Authentic Studios, the company has developed an Emmy award-winning documentary on David Beckham, an HBO series on Shaquille O’Neal, and an animated series based on Elvis; the company also owns _Sports Illustrated_. Projects featuring Muhammad Ali and basketball star Allen Iverson are in the works. Once a brand is in Authentic’s stable, it uses the scale and marketing muscle of the broader enterprise to make connections across the business. “When we're making an Allen Iverson movie, it's really a Reebok and Champion commercial,” he says.

Salter, a Canadian, credits his years immersed in snowboarding subculture for his instinct for what will resonate with people. “I’m a street guy,” he says. “If you want to build brands, you’ve got to understand culture.” He decided to buy Reebok, for example, despite bankers telling him the numbers did not look good, because of his sense—gleaned from speaking with basketball stars Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson, his sons, and “some of the boys on the street”—that Authentic could “triple the business.” Authentic says that Reebok has increased retail sales by $2 billion—from $3.6 billion to $5.6 billion—since its acquisition in 2022, and projects this could hit $10.2 billion by 2028\. If it does, retail sales will indeed have close to tripled.

To keep up momentum, Salter is directing the company to go all-in on AI. Using a variety of the latest AI models and access to proprietary data, Authentic has created agents for every major work flow, all accessible through a centralized platform it calls Authentic AI, which now serves as its core operating system. “It’s doing everything,” he says. “Creative, brand books, royalty reports, legal, accounting. It’s creating business leads.”

But he says people continue to play an important role. While he considers AI magic, “you need a good magician to make good magic,” he says. So far, about half of the company is using their AI on a daily basis, as part of a phased rollout.

The company is privately held, with many of the world's largest private equity firms and several sovereign wealth funds owning stakes. O’Neal and David Beckham, both friends of Salter’s, are independent shareholders. But, Salter says, “for me, it’s still family business. I work with my four boys.” While Salter [plans](https://wwd.com/business-news/business-features/jamie-salter-authentic-brands-group-reebok-guess-champion-1238213033/) to step down as CEO in the next two years—making space for the company’s president to take the role—he intends to stay involved, and has [said](https://wwd.com/business-news/business-features/jamie-salter-authentic-brands-group-reebok-guess-champion-1238213033/) he hopes Authentic will eventually be run by his eldest son, [Corey](https://www.linkedin.com/in/corey-salter-aab3084a/) (currently the company’s president of entertainment & international), and his other children.

In August, Authentic [signed](https://corporate.authentic.com/press-releases/authentic-brands-group-acquisition-guess-intellectual-property) an agreement to acquire a controlling share in Guess?’ IP—a brand which generates over $6 billion dollars in global retail sales. The deal is expected to close by next January. Salter teases that more is on the way. “We’re having fun,” he says.
