When Marvel actor Chris Hemsworth decided to participate in a documentary about [living healthier](https://time.com/collections/future-of-living/7341844/4-science-habits-longer-life/) and [longer](https://time.com/collections/future-of-living/7341841/longevity-age-cells-douglas-vaughan/), he never dreamed his own life would be affected by one of the most devastating diseases of our time. As part of the series, Hemsworth took a [genetic test](https://time.com/6328482/alzheimers-lecanemab-early-diagnosis/) and learned he carries two copies of an Alzheimer’s risk gene, significantly raising his chances of developing the neurodegenerative disease. So he dived into the latest science on living better, in particular for improving [brain health](https://time.com/7081407/brain-health-neurologist-tips/). “I’m definitely someone who suffers from the all-or-nothing approach, and it’s something I’ve had to temper over the years,” Hemsworth says. “My 80-20 or 90-10 rule is to mostly do the right thing but occasionally just go, ‘Hey, eat all the wrong things’ or ‘Do a few of the wrong things.’ That, I feel, is a bit more compassionate to one’s self.”

After the series, Hemsworth’s father Craig was diagnosed with [Alzheimer’s](https://time.com/7273006/alzheimers-disease-blood-test-tau/), and he is starting to show signs of memory loss. Hemsworth’s team suggested a project that focused on how his father was managing with Alzheimer’s. “This opportunity came up for an episode where we do a road trip together, focusing on this thing called reminiscence therapy that’s about connecting with the memories from your past, stimulating the hippocampus and reigniting old memories,” he says. Hemsworth cautiously asked his dad about participating, thinking he might be uncomfortable with exposing his declining memory in such a public way. But, Hemsworth says, “he immediately said, ‘Yeah, sure, why not? If we can help educate someone, and someone can learn something from it, or benefit, then brilliant, I’m on board.’”

The documentary, [_Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember_](https://www.natgeotv.com/za/programs/natgeo/chris-hemsworth-a-road-trip-to-remember)_,_ streaming on Disney+ and Hulu after premiering on National Geographic in November, follows Chris and Craig as they revisit a couple of their former homes, including one in Australia’s remote Northern Territories where the family lived as part of a close Aboriginal community. The idea was to help Craig rekindle old memories and remember friends and experiences in an effort to keep his cognitive networks from declining. “It really became about connection, and the importance of relationships, our sense of community and belonging,” says Hemsworth. He admits that sometimes during filming, when his dad would forget something he had just said, he would feel embarrassed for him and want to stop. “But I also knew from talking to him that he wanted to be raw and open about it, and there is a nobility and sense of integrity in the way he presented that.”

Hemsworth hopes the documentary helps other families affected by [Alzheimer’s](https://time.com/6301936/alzheimers-united-states-inequality/) to understand that while science is working to develop new treatments and capitalize on deeper understanding of how the brain works, it’s also worth spending time on the simple things—like connection, community, and compassion. Reminiscence therapy is something that most people can take advantage of, but it’s not a cure-all. “We didn’t want to present a fix or a solve,” he says. “It’s a reminder of how fleeting our time is, and how we should spend it with the people we love.”
