For nearly a decade, the Minnesota resident fought with every tool medicine made available to her. "I was at a point where it was starting to look bleak," she says. Everything changed in 2022, when one of her oncologists, Dr. Emil Lou at the University of Minnesota, approached her about participating in a clinical trial using a new form of immunotherapy. Lou and his colleagues extracted Dimery’s own immune cells from a tumor, used gene editing to render them resistant to her cancer’s immune suppression, and injected them back into her body. “It was a single infusion,” says Lou, who calls the effects “remarkable.” Within months, Dimery’s cancer was gone. The procedure, detailed in a _Lancet Oncology_ [study](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanonc/article/PIIS1470-2045%2825%2900083-X/abstract "undefined") last May, has the potential to be a useful addition to the arsenal of immunotherapies for cancer.
