When Mikayla Nogueira joined TikTok in 2020, she filmed makeup tutorials in a bathrobe, sometimes narrating in her Boston accent. In one early video, the self-taught makeup artist shared her hack for covering acne, offering a look at her own blemished skin. The clip quickly went viral, and her unfiltered approach helped amass what is now a 16.7 million-strong [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@mikaylanogueira) following. “We were so used to perfection, and I wasn't really that,” she tells TIME.

Five years later, the 27-year-old blends beauty content with more personal topics, including her struggles with disordered eating. “I’ve always been such an open book,” she says. “I do what I do so that other people do not feel alone.” Nogueira knows that feeling. Bullied in middle school for her appearance, she found solace and inspiration from beauty YouTubers like Jaclyn Hill, NikkieTutorials,and Tati Westbrook. Now, as the founder of her own skincare brand, Point of View Beauty, which launched in March, she’s gained a new appreciation for the power of virtual connection. “I definitely have a persona online—all influencers do,” she says. “But to be successful, people just want you to be real. They want you to be you.”
