The U.K.’s AI Security Institute (AISI) began life two years ago as a lean [task force](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/frontier-ai-taskforce-first-progress-report/frontier-ai-taskforce-first-progress-report#we-have-established-an-expert-advisory-board-spanning-ai-research-and-national-security) convened to evaluate the risks posed by cutting-edge AI systems. Today, it employs over 80 technical staff, regularly collaborating with both frontier AI companies and other nations’ safety and security groups—many [inspired](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/global-leaders-agree-to-launch-first-international-network-of-ai-safety-institutes-to-boost-understanding-of-ai) by AISI itself. In short order, it has become “the world-leading organization for this type of security research,” its director Oliver Ilott tells TIME.

Previously a private secretary to the Prime Minister, Ilott has been in charge since AISI’s inception and in mid-August was also appointed as interim director general for AI at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. He saw firsthand the value of ensuring the government has access to scientific expertise during the COVID-19 pandemic—a lesson he’s carried across. “This isn't a think-tank external to government,” he says. “We're here, informing ministers and the British government about how to think about the risks from frontier AI.”

In February, the institute [rebranded](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/tackling-ai-security-risks-to-unleash-growth-and-deliver-plan-for-change)—swapping out “safety” for “security”—to better reflect its focus on evaluating the latest models for their national security implications, like their capacity to be used in cyberattacks, or to create chemical weapons. When OpenAI introduced its ChatGPT agent in July, AISI tested it for biorisks. OpenAI [called](https://cdn.openai.com/pdf/839e66fc-602c-48bf-81d3-b21eacc3459d/chatgpt%5Fagent%5Fsystem%5Fcard.pdf) AISI’s work “thorough and instructive,” noting that the institute had allowed the company to improve its safeguards and “remediate vulnerabilities.”

AISI also works with other countries’ technical institutes, conducting joint-testing exercises from which they all learn. Having gained an additional £240 million in government funding this June, it also co-launched a £15 million [fund](https://alignmentproject.aisi.gov.uk/) to support research into AI alignment—the unsolved challenge of ensuring systems reliably act as intended.

To Ilott, AISI’s largest accomplishments are found in routine places. “It's the small moments where you overhear researchers talking about something they're doing…and you have the sense that this organization is just working,” he says. “It's real. It exists. And it's unusual and precious and impactful.”
