For more than two decades, Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda has been turning vast datasets into visceral experiences. Collaborating with mathematicians and physicists, Ikeda creates soundscapes and sweeping audiovisual installations that transpose data from the likes of NASA, CERN, and the Human Genome Project into sound and light—producing minimalist works that, with stark geometric forms and precisely-calibrated frequencies, push the limits of human perception.

“I’m playing,” he tells TIME, likening the process to composing with a musical scale or cooking a meal. “Sometimes you cook data for Chinese food, or sushi, that kind of thing,” he says. “You can analyze scientifically or mathematically or whatever, but art is not for that. You have to feel. You have to eat."

Ikeda’s work has featured at major venues like London’s Tate Modern and Paris’s Pompidou, yet he describes himself as “totally uneducated,” despite his extensive self-study of subjects like astronomy and quantum physics.

His lack of formal training, he concedes, does enable unbound creativity. “I just freely make something, like a band. When they make music, do they think about being useful? They just like it," he says. “Eventually it could be useful, of course, but in the first place I shouldn’t think like that.”

This year, after the exhibition of his [dataverse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmEz0nTl4qw) trilogy at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, Ikeda says he has finished his data-driven installation work. His attention has turned to acoustic composition, while he discerns how AI fits into his practice. “How can I misuse it? That’s what I still don’t know,” he says, drawing a comparison with how DJs scratched vinyl, or Jimi Hendrix distorted guitar to make new and interesting sounds.

Though the artist is fiercely private, he feels “one millimetre of responsibility" to encourage the younger generation to find their own ways to “do more crazy,” he says. "We always need critical eyes on new technology," Ikeda says. “The point of view of an artist is fresh, and it should be radical. Otherwise, nice idea, fine, but it goes to an advertising company. You know?”
