Chief scientist, Google

Google’s chief scientist Jeff Dean is a quiet legend in the world of AI. As the company’s 30th employee, he helped turn Google from a tiny startup into a computational behemoth, building tools crucial for processing huge quantities of data across thousands of machines. Dean is so revered inside the company that his colleagues created a tongue-in-cheek list of “Jeff Dean Facts” one April Fool’s Day. “The speed of light in a vacuum used to be about 35 mph,” reads fact number eight. “Then Jeff Dean spent a weekend optimizing physics.”

Long before the current boom in AI, Dean was thinking about how to position Google for AI dominance. In 2013, after a speech-recognition model showed promising results, he did some back-of-the-envelope calculations to check how many chips Google would need to deploy it. The numbers indicated that doing so would require doubling the number of CPUs in Google’s possession. Dean thought there had to be a much more efficient way to do it. He started a team on a mission to design specialized machine learning chips, which ended up being 30 to 80 times more efficient. Google still uses these chips, known as TPUs, to train the bulk of its AI models—a crucial advantage against other AI companies who rely on third parties to produce their chips.

It was a team under Dean’s supervision that, in 2017, came up with the transformer: the neural network architecture that underpins all of today’s biggest advances in AI. But Google suffered a setback when a rival company, OpenAI, turned that innovation into the first viral AI product. “I think we were a little caught up on the fact that these models make mistakes sometimes,” Dean tells TIME. Accepting the risk of uncertain—and sometimes [embarrassing](https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/21/24079371/google-ai-gemini-generative-inaccurate-historical)—outputs of large language models is something that Google’s corporate decisionmakers have since become more comfortable with.

But if Google was perceived as an AI laggard in the wake of ChatGPT, it has shed that reputation. In 2023 it was Dean who pushed to merge Google’s two AI research efforts, Google Brain and Google DeepMind, into one organization. He named the AI that resulted from this merger Gemini, “because it's like twins coming together.” Gemini, which Dean co-leads, is now seen as broadly on par with OpenAI’s latest models in terms of capabilities. And Dean doesn’t foresee progress slowing down any time soon. “If you think back five years ago to what these models could do, it's a major difference between the models of today,” he says. “I think you'll see pretty similar levels of difference in the models five years from now.”
