Photo-Illustration by TIME (Courtesy Photo) More than 20 years ago, Andy Jassy started to build Amazon Web Services (AWS), which would become a key provider of the infrastructure that underpins the internet today—and is what Amazon hopes will be the foundation upon which the current AI surge is built. Under Jassy’s leadership, Amazon has been making a major push into AI. Over the past year it has announced multiple AI products and services, including Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, which allows customers to deploy and operate AI agents; Amazon Nova, its suite of foundation AI models; and Amazon Q, a generative AI assistant. It’s also taking on Nvidia with [its Trainium chips](https://time.com/7273288/amazon-anthropic-openai-microsoft-stargate-datacenters/ "undefined"). In December, AWS announced it was building a massive AI supercomputer, featuring hundreds of thousands of Trainium chips, in collaboration with Anthropic. In the warehouses of its e-commerce business, Amazon has deployed Vulcan, its first AI-powered robot with a sense of touch. The company has [said](https://www.wsj.com/tech/amazon-warehouse-robots-automation-942b814f "undefined") that around 75% of Amazon’s deliveries around the world are in some way assisted by robotics, and it is training warehouse staff in mechatronics and offering robotics apprenticeships. But according to Jassy, it’s white-collar jobs at Amazon that may be at risk from AI.
