It would take him up to a year to design the first structure, trying to guess how a molecule would bind to a protein target, then more years refining it. Today, access to those insights takes mere seconds at Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug discovery company where he is chief scientific officer. A Google company founded out of DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs recently announced $600 million in funding, with the ambitious goal of using AI to help cure all diseases. In 2024, the company announced partnerships with both Eli Lilly and Novartis. It is yet to bring any AI-designed drugs to market, but is gearing up for its first human trials. Congreve is the rare scientist to see more than one of the drugs he worked on reach commercialization; in his career, he helped design 25 clinically-evaluated drugs and co-invented a treatment for breast cancers. But AI has somewhat changed the horizon of what he thinks possible. “We're very much at the beginning of this revolution in life sciences,” he tells TIME. He believes a general model of human biology is within the reach of computer discovery. After that, medicine will be about prevention of serious diseases, rather than treatment. “I like to think about a world, 20 years from now, where we won’t be treating people \[for disease\]. We’ll be predicting that someone has the potential to have a disease,” he says, “And people will be treated 10 or 15 years before they actually get \[it\].” **Correction, Aug. 28** _The original version of this story misstated the timeline for Isomorphic beginning human trials.
