If the world is to transition away from carbon-hungry energy sources, we’ll need a lot of raw materials to do it. Now artificial intelligence is being deployed in mining for them, and Mfikeyi Makayi is helping to lead the way. As the head of KoBold Metals’ Africa arm, Makayi is tasked with fast-tracking what is estimated to be a [$2 billion underground copper mine](https://www.miningreview.com/magazine-article/leadership-profile-mfikeyi-makayi/) in Zambia’s Chililabombwe district for production by the early 2030s. KoBold’s AI tools analyzed decades of geological data, pinpointing where to drill to access what is estimated to be one of the largest copper deposits found in recent decades..

KoBold Metals deploys AI technology to find minerals such as copper, lithium, cobalt, and nickel, all of which are crucial to the electric vehicle and renewable energy industries. Thanks to KoBold’s AI models, drilling on mineral tenements can now be performed both more quickly and more accurately. In addition to Zambia, Makayi also leads the California-based company’s mineral discovery projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, and Botswana.

Investors have bought in: Kobold Metals closed out a [$537 million Series C round](https://techcrunch.com/2025/01/02/kobold-used-ai-to-find-copper-now-investors-are-piling-in-to-the-tune-of-537m/) in early 2025, valuing the company at nearly $3 billion. Among its backers are [Bill Gates](https://time.com/7172529/bill-gates-climate/), Jeff Bezos, and [Reid Hoffman](https://time.com/collection/time100-ai/6309447/reid-hoffman/). The startup’s projects in Africa aren’t just vital to its own success, either. They’ve taken on geopolitical import, too, as nations compete over the critical minerals that can remake their energy industries. China currently controls more than 80% of certain portions of the EV battery chain. KoBold Metal hopes its efforts will tip the scales.

Makayi says the company’s goal is to “embed a transformation” in mineral discovery, where spotting more deposits becomes second nature. If the world wants to transition to clean energy, “we're going to need to mine within the next half century as much as we've mined in the history of mankind for us to achieve the transition,” she says. “If there's a word for more than exponential, it's more than exponential. We've got a climate to save at this point.”
