Every year, more than [a million women](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507826/) in the U.S. reach menopause, a natural step in the aging process that’s [defined](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21841-menopause) by not having a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.

But while most women go through menopause in [their late 40s or early 50s](https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/menopause/what-menopause)—the [average age ](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/menopause/symptoms-causes/syc-20353397)in the U.S. is 51—a small number experience it a little earlier. Around [5%](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21138-premature-and-early-menopause) of women reach menopause before 45—known as “early menopause”—and about [3%](https://menopause.org/patient-education/menopause-topics/premature-menopause) experience “premature menopause,” which happens before they turn 40\.

Anything that damages the ovaries or prompts your body to stop producing estrogen can trigger early menopause, [including](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21138-premature-and-early-menopause) chemotherapy, pelvic radiation, and [hormone therapy](https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/hormone-therapy-for-breast-cancer/about/pac-20384943) for some breast cancers. Having an oophorectomy, a surgery to remove your ovaries—whether by itself or as [part of a hysterectomy](https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/oophorectomy/about/pac-20385030)—will also put you into menopause. Early menopause may sometimes occur as a result of autoimmune diseases or chromosomal abnormalities, but it can also happen spontaneously [without](https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/early-and-premature-menopause) a clear cause.

What is clear, though, is that early menopause can have a significant impact on physical and emotional health, both in daily life and over the long term.

And despite the [lessening taboo](https://time.com/6565057/menopause-treatment-symptoms-mainstream/) around menopause in recent years, candid discussion about the challenges of early menopause hasn’t quite caught up, says Donna Klassen, co-founder of the nonprofit organization Let’s Talk Menopause and a licensed clinical social worker with a focus on women's reproductive mental health. “I would say we’re not there yet,” she says. “I think that that's sort of the next frontier.”

## You’re losing more than just your period

When your ovaries no longer produce estrogen, the consequences are wide and varied. Menopause can cause more than 30 [symptoms](https://www.letstalkmenopause.org/symptoms), which run the gamut from mood changes, brain fog, and [vasomotor issues](https://www.webmd.com/menopause/menopause-vasomotor-symptoms) like hot flashes and night sweats, to sexual dysfunction, UTIs, and joint pain. “People don't know all the ways that it can affect you, and they're taken by surprise,” Klassen says.

That can be particularly true if you go through menopause at a younger age, says Dr. Mindy Goldman, a gynecologist at the University of San Francisco California and chief clinical officer at Midi Health, a women's health care company specializing in menopause and perimenopause.

**Read More**: [_What Menopause Does to the Brain_](https://time.com/collections/time-for-you-menopause/7328125/menopause-brain-health/)

Due to a [slowed metabolism](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8704126/) and weight changes during menopause, for example, many women develop visceral fat around their abdomen, which can be a [risk factor](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16448989/) for metabolic diseases like diabetes. But for a woman navigating early menopause, “it may not be on their radar that ‘I need to check my lipids, I need to check my blood sugar,’” Goldman says. Though it’s important for health care providers to help women manage their menopause symptoms, equally crucial is “talking to people about other diseases that can develop.”

That’s because estrogen doesn't just regulate the menstrual cycle—it [also benefits](https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-does-estrogen-do) almost every organ in the body, protecting your heart, brain, and bones. Women who go through menopause at a younger age—and are therefore deprived of estrogen for a longer time—can be at a greater risk of[ heart disease](https://newsroom.heart.org/news/early-menopause-linked-to-higher-risk-of-future-coronary-heart-disease), [dementia](https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/dementia-link-to-early-menopause), [depression,](https://menopause.org/press-releases/depression-often-associated-with-early-menopause-why-some-women-are-at-greater-risk) and [osteoporosis](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17476146/) as they get older.

“It can significantly impact one's quality of life outside of just the symptoms, because there can also be an impact on overall morbidity and mortality,” says Dr. Monica Christmas, associate medical director of the Menopause Society and an ob-gyn at the University of Chicago. Even just knowing those risks, adds Klassen, “can be really frightening for people.”

## Symptoms may hit harder

When women go through menopause at the “natural” age, “it tends to be this gradual decline of ovarian function,” says Goldman. Most will go through [perimenopause](https://time.com/7019600/perimenopause-signs-symptoms/), a transitional period that usually lasts an average of four years before periods permanently stop.

But if a premenopausal woman enters menopause suddenly, as a result of cancer treatment or surgery, the switch can feel more intense. “They had normal ovarian function and weren't feeling symptoms, and then, boom, you drop them into menopause,” Goldman says. Though there’s no data to show that their symptoms will last longer than they otherwise would have, she says, “oftentimes the severity of symptoms is different because of having that extreme drop.”

That can be hard to grapple with mentally, Klassen says. “Part of perimenopause is it gives you the time to be able to be like, ‘OK, I'm getting older, this is what's happening to my body,” she says. By contrast, when you're thrown into menopause decades before you were expecting it, “there's no time to process it as much.”

## It can feel isolating

Going through menopause earlier than expected can bring up sadness about the premature loss of your fertility, as well as other questions and anxieties, Klassen says, like “‘If I'm postmenopausal, am I still attractive? Am I going to start looking older than I am?’”

And that processing often happens alone. Because early menopause is relatively rare, it can feel isolating to weather an experience that none of your peers can identify with, Goldman says.

“Your friends are talking about having babies, potentially, and you're talking about managing osteoporosis or preventing heart disease,” she says. “It is really, really difficult.”

## But you don't have to muscle through alone

What’s important for women navigating early menopause to realize, says Goldman, is that “there is absolutely no reason that people need to suffer.” There are treatments—both [hormonal](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/menopause/in-depth/hormone-therapy/art-20046372) and [non-hormonal](https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/nonhormonal-treatments-for-menopause)—for a wide range of menopause symptoms, she says, and an experienced practitioner can help you narrow down what’s right for you.

Treating even one symptom can have downstream benefits too, says Christmas. “If someone is having debilitating night sweats that are disrupting their sleep, they may have more brain fog the next day, they may feel more irritable,” she explains. “But if we’re able to manage their vasomotor symptoms, help them get some more sleep, then they may feel better.”

Making lifestyle tweaks around diet, exercise, stress, and mindfulness can also help, she says. “All of those interventions can be hugely important in terms of maximizing and maintaining overall mental and physical wellbeing.”

Goldman also recommends finding a support group of other women going through early menopause who can understand what you're experiencing. “I do think it's hard when your peers are in a totally different place,” she says.

While you may be the only person you know who's navigating early menopause, "it doesn't mean that you're just out there on this island by yourself and that it's all doom and gloom and that you’re about to just age exponentially,” says Christmas. “That’s not true.”
