Tamsen Fadal was working as a news anchor when she started having trouble pronouncing basic words on the teleprompter: For the life of her, she couldn’t get the word “subpoena” out correctly. She also noticed that, mid-conversation, she was constantly forgetting what she was about to say.

Her struggles were scary and, for too long, mystifying. Eventually, a doctor determined she was experiencing menopause-related brain fog. “It really hits your confidence,” says Fadal, who’s now a menopause advocate and author of [_How To Menopause: Take Charge of Your Health, Reclaim Your Life, and Feel Even Better Than Before_](https://www.amazon.com/How-Menopause-Charge-Health-Reclaim/dp/0306833549). “I see so many women in this particular age group who are in these high-stress careers, and all of a sudden, they’re in board meetings and they lose their train of thought, and brain fog hits.”

We asked experts what to know about the driving forces behind menopause-related brain fog—and what to do about it.

## **What brain fog feels like**

Brain fog during menopause is one of the most common and debilitating complaints many providers hear about from women. Dr. Heather Hirsch, founder of the Menopause Clinic at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and author of books including [_The Perimenopause Survival Guide_](https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/heather-hirsch/the-perimenopause-survival-guide/9781538774106/), has found it impacts her patients even more than symptoms like hot flashes and poor sleep. After experiencing it herself, she’s not surprised: “It almost feels like when you have the flu or you’re a little out of it, but \[you’re\] not sick at all,” she says. “It feels like this invisible barrier or walking through quicksand where you're like, ‘What is happening?’”

Women experiencing menopause-related brain fog often have trouble remembering names—or emerge from a meeting only to realize they can’t recall a single thing that was said. They might walk into a room and forget what they planned to do when they got there. It’s also common to have trouble focusing. “By the end of my day, I have seven emails I’ve started, and I’ve obviously gotten distracted and haven’t finished one of them,” says Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director of The Menopause Society and director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Women's Health, of the experience of having menopause. “You can imagine how that's challenging for women who are used to multitasking.”

Brain fog can affect women’s lives in other significant ways: Some pass up promotion opportunities or choose to retire early because they’re struggling so much, Hirsch says. Others become socially isolated because they can no longer keep up in conversations. And of course, many become sick with anxiety that something really serious is wrong, like dementia, since it can take providers a while to pinpoint an accurate diagnosis.

## **What triggers brain fog**

There’s very little research on brain fog during menopause. That's partly because it's a more subjective measure than, for example, hot flashes, which can be counted as discrete events. Women also have different experiences of brain fog, which further complicates the ability to study it with rigor, Hirsch says.

Still, experts have theories on what causes this kind of mental haze during menopause. The primary factor is [declining levels of the hormone estrogen](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8394691/), which affects neurotransmitters that play an important role in memory, attention, and motivation. Trouble sleeping exacerbates the situation: As estrogen levels drop, women often experience night sweats and wake up with heart palpitations or panicked feelings.

Losing estrogen triggers an array of metabolic changes that can also contribute to brain fog. Many women notice their cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar start to go up during menopause. “These are all little fluctuations that impact the brain’s functioning,” Hirsch says.

It’s also typical for women to begin experiencing menopause symptoms at inconvenient times, when they’re already mentally overloaded. “Your kids are going to college, your parents are aging, you have to figure out what to do with your retirement accounts, the pet is getting old, the gutters need to be changed, and the roof needs to be replaced,” Hirsch says. “All this stress happens to peak at the same time as your estrogen is declining, and I would put that high on the list of what adds to the brain fog.”

The good news is that brain fog is usually temporary. “It tends to improve as women go across the menopause transition, and it does not seem to predict future risk of dementia,” Faubion says.

## **Coping with brain fog**

The first step to supporting women who experience menopause symptoms—particularly this one—is validating what they’re going through. “Our job as physicians is to continuously reassess and give them the space to say, ‘I think things are changing. Can we have another conversation?’” says Dr. Deepali Kothary, a menopause specialist at Kaiser Permanente in Virginia. Once that rapport is established, a variety of solutions can help. Here are seven steps to consider:

### **Talk to your provider about hormone menopause therapy**

[Hormone replacement therapy](https://time.com/7332940/fda-estrogen-menopause-black-box-warning/), which involves using hormones like estrogen and progesterone to treat menopause symptoms, isn't the only option or the right one for all women, Hirsch says. But it can be “extremely effective in helping reduce brain fog.” In the decade-plus she’s been prescribing it, she’s found that women tend to see marked improvements in memory, executive-functioning, and other brain fog-related struggles. If you’re interested, talk to your provider about whether it’s worth a try, she advises.

### **Prioritize sleep**

Ideally, you should be getting seven to eight hours of restorative sleep per night, Hirsch says. She recommends keeping your bedroom dark and cold, while avoiding anything that might interrupt your sleep quality. Taking a [magnesium glycinate supplement](https://time.com/6258780/magnesium-glycinate-sleep-anxiety-tiktok/) can help people get better sleep, too, she’s found.

### **Leave yourself Post-it notes**

When Fadal’s days were clouded by brain fog, she started sticking Post-it notes all over her walls, computer screen, and other surfaces to remind herself of upcoming tasks. “I’d put the most important things I had to do for the day, like call the pharmacy, because otherwise I’d forget,” she says. The system helped her stay on track and feel more organized, which in turn helped her stress less.

**Read More**: [_Stop Taking Melatonin as a Sleep Aid, Say Sleep Doctors_](https://time.com/7332560/melatonin-and-heart-failure-sleep-supplement/)

### **Designate a container for everything**

Fadal adopted another anti-brain fog hack during the throes of menopause: She got a tray that she designated her home base, where she stored all the essentials she kept misplacing, like her smartphone, AirPods, and car keys. Then she set up labeled baskets around the house: candles, lightbulbs, batteries. “It was really helpful,” she says. “Simplistic but helpful.”

### **Commit time to fitness and mindfulness**

Exercising and practicing mindfulness are two solid ways to lift some of your brain fog. Kothary suggests making time for [strength training](https://time.com/7323121/strength-training-exercises-aging-health-benefits/) and [walking](https://time.com/7306018/maximize-health-benefits-walking/)—whatever you're most likely to stick to consistently. Mindfulness might include meditation, yoga, or [deep-breathing](https://time.com/7005562/how-to-do-breathwork/). The important thing is that whatever you choose “is something where you can focus on yourself and say, ‘This is my time,’” Kothary says.

### **Stimulate your brain**

Improving your neuroplasticity—which refers to the brain’s ability to form new neural connections—can help [alleviate brain fog](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10334862). You can do that by learning something new, like a language you were always interested in, doing crossword puzzles or other brain-stimulating games, and engaging with social connections. “Anything where you’re using your brain is very important,” Kothary says. “Find an hour a week where you’re just meeting with a friend and having coffee and talking, and not looking at your phone.”

### **Eat certain foods**

Prioritizing a diet that's good for your body andbrain can help you feel cognitively sharper. Hirsch suggests limiting simple carbs like sugary drinks, chips, cookies, and processed foods in order to avoid glucose spikes, incorporating healthy protein into every meal, and considering supplementing with [creatine](https://time.com/7313953/creatine-supplements-benefits-brain/). Some of her patients also report that B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids help lift their brain fog.

Above all else, remember that help is available, and you don't need to suffer alone. “Brain fog is really, really common, and very normal,” Hirsch says. “If it’s affecting your quality of life and your productivity, you should seek care, because there’s some really good treatments out there now.”
