Greg Chasen thinks about home design differently. Chasen is the founder of [Chasen Architecture](https://www.chasenarc.com/), a California-based firm that works with experts to mobilize and share resources, knowledge, and expertise to rebuild communities destroyed by recent fires. He gained attention earlier this year when one of his homes [miraculously remained standing](https://time.com/7249238/disaster-resilient-architecture/) following the devastating wildfires that tore through Los Angeles and parts of San Diego County, claiming the lives of 29 people and destroying more than 16,000 structures.

Six months prior, he had completed work on the home: a two-story house for his friends in Pacific Palisades. By a combination of luck and careful planning, the newly constructed home withstood the Palisades Fire, even as 120 homes down the street burned.

The factors that made the difference? The [design](https://time.com/7249238/disaster-resilient-architecture/) incorporated defensible space, or a border around the house free from flammable items like dead plants or wooden furniture, and fire-resilient elements including gravel and low plants. The house featured double-paned windows to keep the fire out. And while most attic designs rely on vents to prevent condensation, Chasen’s design didn’t. Vents are among the easiest ways for embers to get in.

Chasen posted to [social media](https://www.instagram.com/p/DEvq7B1SGsf/) days after discovering that the home was standing: “While very relieved to find that this house survived, I’m gutted that so many of our dearest friends lost everything. Hopefully this photo helps shine a small bit of light towards a better future ahead.”
