Last fall Boemeke and her husband, Joe Gebbia, donated $5 million toward an_ [_initiative_](https://efifoundation.org/insights/major-philanthropic-gift-establishes-nuclear-scaling-initiative-catalyzing-effort-to-increase-nuclear-energy-deployment-10x-by-the-2030s/ "undefined") _to ramp up global nuclear energy installations to 50 gigawatts per year by the end of the decade. Boemeke’s book,_ Rad Future: The Untold Story of Nuclear Electricity and How It Will Save the World_, was published in August._ **What is the single most important action you think the public, or a specific company or government, needs to take in the next year to advance the climate agenda?** Governments and companies need to ensure we see the nuclear renaissance through by actively supporting and investing in nuclear electricity. What exactly does this involve? Extending the licenses of existing plants, restarting previously shuttered ones, making it easier to test small reactors, and continued funding. Without government and private funding, as well as public support, the nuclear renaissance will fail and as a result we will keep our reliance on fossil fuels. We have a powerful tool to combat climate change, and for decades we've been too afraid to use it to its full potential. The fear around nuclear electricity has mostly been shaped by cultural memes and misinformation. Nuclear is one of the safest, the most reliable, and lowest-carbon forms of energy we have. The time for debate is over, we need to deploy all clean energy sources at our disposal, and nuclear is going to be a central part of that plan. The government and companies that champion nuclear electricity are not only investing in a clean energy future, but also in energy abundance, security, and a better world. **What gives you hope about the future of the planet?** The growing recognition of nuclear electricity's essential role gives me hope. It's the only clean energy source that can provide reliable, on-demand power at a massive scale. When I see bipartisan political support, public support and investment, prominent environmentalists and climate activists changing their minds and advocating for nuclear, it's a powerful sign. They are moving beyond decades of fear-mongering to embrace science. This is not just a trend, it's a necessary correction. **If you could stand up and talk to world leaders at the next COP, what would you say?** Keep going. The climate crisis is a massive problem that requires changes at every level of society. There will be setbacks in the process, but don’t let those discourage us or take the focus away from the work. Stop closing existing nuclear power plants. Reinvest in existing large reactors, while also investing in new technologies and SMRs (small modular reactors).
