Yayra Agbofah has had an intimate look at the world’s fast-fashion crisis. Before he launched [The Revival](https://www.therevival.earth/), a sustainable clothing nonprofit based in Accra, Ghana, Agbofah was a second-hand trader at the city’s sprawling [Kantamanto Market](https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2025/feb/24/ghana-clothes-market-fire-kantamanto-rebuild). That market, where more than 30,000 retailers sell used garments, is one of the largest in Africa and has made Ghana the epicenter of textile waste. Millions of items every week end up in unsanctioned dumps and much of it ultimately is washed into the ocean. “We shouldn’t be having beaches dirty with clothing,” Agbofah says. “If we’re producing waste, the industry is broken.”

In 2018, he set about fixing that problem, launching The Revival as an upcycling effort. Agbofah and his team began repairing low-quality and damaged clothing that would have otherwise been discarded—and they’ve taught locals to do the same. Over the past seven years, he estimates 12 million garments have been redirected away from landfills, an effort that has reduced CO2 emissions by more than 12,000 metric tons. He’s also created local jobs and partnered with global universities to develop [courses](https://www.therevival.earth/resources) to educate emerging designers about the perils of fast fashion.

Coupled with his upcycling work, Agbofah’s education initiative earned him a 2025 [Global Change Award](https://hmfoundation.com/2025/05/20/meet-the-winners-of-global-change-award-2025/) from the H&M Foundation, which carries with it a €200,000 grant that will help him build a recycling lab in Accra, scheduled to open in December. “I founded \[The Revival\] to turn this crisis into an opportunity,” he says. “It was urgent. I had to do something.”

Agbofah answered TIME’s survey on the state of the climate movement:

**What is the single most important action you think the public, or a specific company or government, needs to take in the next year to advance the climate agenda?**

Governments in the Global North must take accountability for the afterlife of their clothes. Each week, millions of unsellable garments are dumped in places like Kantamanto, creating pollution and poverty. Enforcing extended producer responsibility (EPR) and investing in circular infrastructure in the Global South is urgent. Without this, fashion’s climate pledges remain incomplete.

**What’s one sustainability effort you personally will try to adopt in the next year?**

At The Revival, I want to measure and share our climate impact more transparently. We already divert millions of garments \[from landfills\], but tracking CO₂ and water savings will strengthen our advocacy. Pairing hard data with lived stories shows that solutions already exist in the Global South. It shifts the narrative from charity to justice.

**What is a climate solution that isn't getting the attention or funding it deserves?**

Repair systems in the Global South are an undervalued climate solution. Tailors and artisans extend the life of millions of garments daily, yet receive little recognition or funding. Investing in local repair ecosystems would cut waste, lower emissions, and create green jobs immediately. It’s low-cost, low-carbon, and deeply cultural, but too often overlooked.

**What gives you hope about the future of the planet?**

What gives me hope is the creativity and resilience of young people and communities on the frontlines. In Kantamanto, I see traders, artisans and youth turning waste into value every day with little support. Their ingenuity proves that solutions already exist, what’s missing is recognition and investment. If the climate movement can finally center these voices, the future will be more just and truly sustainable.

**If you could stand up and talk to world leaders at the next COP, what would you say?**

I would tell world leaders that climate justice means waste justice. Countries in the Global South should not be landfills for the Global North’s overconsumption. Invest in the people already repairing, reusing, and innovating in our markets, their knowledge is key to a truly circular economy. Stop shifting the burden, and start building accountability and equity into global climate policy.
